Children And Grown-ups - by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

  Children And Grown-ups
 by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

The Lord Jesus said to a religious leader of His day: “Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). All true Christians have been born again by the Spirit of God (Titus 3:5). They are therefore the children of God (Romans 8:16).

Children are a joy in any normal household, but it is a tragedy when a child remains a child, physically, mentally or both. It is a tragedy too, that so many Christians, truly born again, remain spiritual babes - they do not grow. They know that Christ died for their sins but have made no progress in grace or in the knowledge of the Word. To such Paul wrote:

“And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual [men], but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat; for hitherto ye were not able to bear [digest] it, neither yet now are ye able” (I Corinthians 3:1,2).

Thus those who, spiritually undeveloped, were able to digest only the milk, or the simple things, of the Scriptures, were called “carnal” and “babes,” in contrast to those “spiritual” believers who had grown in grace and were able to assimilate the deeper, richer truths of the Word of God.

This is not a compliment to those who constantly boast that they are satisfied with “the simple things,” and fail to study God’s Word, as II Timothy 2:15 commands. To such Paul writes, by divine inspiration:

“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again… and are become such as have need of milk… For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the Word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But strong meat [solid food] belongeth to them that are of full age…” (Hebrews 5:12-14).

A new-born babe in Christ is a joy to behold, but every born-again Christian should grow through the study of the Word. I Peter 2:2 says:

“As newborn babes desire the sincere [pure] milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby.”

SUFFERING FOR CHRIST - By Robert E. Hanna

Wishful thinkers contend that it is not in God's plan that the saints should suffer. Scripture teaches us otherwise. Part of our testimony for Christ is that we will suffer. It is difficult to understand this principle. In the scope of our human intellect it seems unjust, that God's most faithful servants should suffer in greater degree than those who show Him little or no respect.

This is where faith comes in. By faith we accept His own declaration that He is just. And by faith we accept our destiny as sufferers. "For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only, to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His sake" (PhiI. I:29). "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together" (Romans 8:16,17). "Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution" (2 Timothy  3:12).

In defending his firm stand against the teaching of circumcision, Paul writes to the Galatians, "And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution" (Galatians 5:11)? He is saying that the reason he is suffering is that he is faithfully preaching God's truth. Describing the rigors of his ministry Paul writes, "Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling-place; and labor, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it" (1 Corinthians 4:11,12).

Paul takes suffering in stride, knowing that, as a servant of Christ it is His portion. "Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions in distresses for Christ's sake" (2 Corinthians 12:10). When Paul asked the Lord to relieve him of the thorn in the flesh that Satan had afflicted him with, the Lord refused. Paul's response was, "I will rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me" (2 Corinthians 5;17.

THE DEATH OF THE CROSS - by C. R. Stam

There are four words which every one of us should consider in connection with Christ's death at Calvary if we would fully appreciate what our Savior did for us there.

 CRUCIFIXION

It is doubtful whether man has ever conceived a more cruel and humiliating way to execute even the vilest criminals. The physical agony alone must have been horrible beyond comprehension. The criminal was nailed to a tree and left to hang there, writhing in the most intense pain until, fevers wracking his body, he died. And then think of the humiliation as he hung there, stripped and naked, to suffer shame and disgrace before the public gaze. Little wonder Philippians 2:8 says that Christ humbled Himself to become obedient "unto death, even the death of the cross."

  SUBSTITUTION

We have not even begun to understand the cross if we do not understand that Christ died there as our Substitute, paying for our sins.

"Christ died for our sins" (I Corinthians 15:3). "His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree" (1 Peter 2:24).

 REPRESENTATION

But Christ was more than our Substitute; He was our voluntary Representative at Calvary.  He had taken on Himself human form that He might represent man before God and die as Man for men.

"As it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment, so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many..." (Hebrews 9:27, 28).

"[He] was made... lower than the angels... that He by the grace of God should taste death for every man" (Hebrews 2:9).

  IDENTIFICATION

It follows from this that if Christ represented me at Calvary, He became identified with me there, and I am identified with Him as I accept this by faith. Hence Paul exclaims:

"I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20).

Have You Any Room for Jesus? - Pastor Charles Wages

HAVE YOU ANY ROOM FOR JESUS?
Pastor Charles Wages

"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn." (Luke 2:7)

The truth found in this scripture is familiar to many and unknown to many more. It's real impact is lost upon an unbelieving world. We all need to be reminded of our Lord's birth and the events surrounding it.

Why was there "no room in the inn?" Let's consider just a few reasons. One reason could be the gross ignorance of God's Word by the people, and therefore a lack of spiritual insight. The innkeeper could have known that the prophets had told of the coming of the promised Messiah and how He would be born. The prophet Micah proclaimed:

"But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel: whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting." (Micah 5:2)

Even old wicked Herod was able to find out where Jesus was to be born (Matthew 2:1-6). Also, the faithful Simeon waited patiently for our Lord`s coming into this world and was there when the little baby was brought to the temple. Isaiah, the prince of prophets, wrote some 700 years before the birth of Christ:

"Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14)

Isaiah further prophesied :

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment, even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this." (Isaiah 9:6-7)

It is amazing, yet tragic, that even in our time there seems to be widespread ignorance of the real meaning of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is another reason that the innkeeper was not prepared and therefore had "no room." It is that he was too busy. This was the time of registration and taxing of the citizens of that part of the world (Luke 2:1-5). Business at the inn was excellent and therefore pressing. He wasn't too concerned about the condition of those who applied for a room. He wasn't personally concerned about the guests and those who needed a room. This reminds us of the hymn we often sing which says,

Room for pleasure,
Room for business,
But for Christ, the crucified,
Not a place that He can enter,
In the heart for which He died.

The business world capitalizes on the birth of Jesus. It is hard to even have time to think of His wonderful birth, death, and resurrection. Other names, other interests, other people take first place. What is the celebration all about? No time, no thought, no room for the Saviour who loves us so much! Do we recognize His glory among all the glamour and glitter?

Another reason why there was "no room" in the inn is that the world has changed and corrupted His Name. We are not told whether the innkeeper inquired of the names of Joseph and Mary. No doubt, he wasn`t interested enough to say, "What are you going to name your little baby?" The Hebrew people were very particular in giving names to their children that were descriptive and significant. For instance, Benjamin means "son of my right hand." Obadiah means "servant of Jehovah." Immanuel means, "God with us." His earthly name, Jesus, means "Saviour," and is the theme of the Bible. The name "Christ" means "Anointed One," the promised One who would come to His people Israel. His full title or name is now the Lord Jesus Christ. What a wonderful name! It led Peter to say,

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12)

His name is above every name. The apostle Paul was led to exclaim,

"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11)

Is there room in your heart and home for this gracious, glorious Person? Are you lacking in spiritual understanding? Are you too busy? Are you not aware of the great significance of His name? Let's think soberly, soundly, and scripturally concerning His birth and have room for Him. In fact, He should fill our lives.

RISEN IN CHRIST - By HAROLD STEINBRON

 Scripture Reading: I Thessalonians 4:16

Resurrection is only for the body. The only ones who will take part in the raising of these select dead are those who have already been placed in Christ by the baptism of the Spirit of God. To be IN CHRIST is to immediately partake of the Life of God: that is eternal life. The body may become dust before God's program is ready for the Spirit and soul to be reunited.

At this resurrection, the spirit of those who experienced what Paul spoke of---absent from the body, present with the Lord---(No soul sleep there!) will return to earth to see that pile of dust be raised so they can now be once again in the body now made new and be present with the Lord, in their new body.

Resurrection for the members of the Body of Christ has already happened---IN CHRIST! Because He lives, we too shall live! Those who are born once will die twice. Those who are born twice will die once. Eternal life is experienced in the Spirit, at the moment of salvation. Eternal life will be experienced by the mortal body either at this special resurrection, or at the moment of translation. We shall not all sleep, and perhaps this generation will be the one to see this glorious thing happen. Not death, but translation!

IN CHRIST, we have died, we have been buried, and we have been raised from the dead. Our whole life is now on the resurrection side of the grave. Eternal life is not only quantitative, it is qualitative. Resurrection is just one more benefit of being IN CHRIST.
