TRUTH ABOUT KINGDOM TRUTH - By Les Feldick

The intent of this Position Paper is to identify the consequences of not distinguishing between the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven. The Kingdom of God is the universal and eternal rule of God. The Kingdom of Heaven is the earthly sphere of the Kingdom of God, the coming Messianic reign of Jesus Christ, the Son of David. Found only in Matthew's Gospel, the book of the King and His coming Kingdom, it looks to His heavenly rule over the earth in the soon-coming millennium.

Over the past half century hypo dispensational leaders have turned their minds from the distinctions of the Kingdom of Heaven, and have embraced the error of making it synonymous with the Kingdom of God, ignoring the biblical division between earthly Israel and the heavenly Body of Christ, the Church of this age. Forgetting the message of Galatians, they attempt to make grace subject to the Mosaic Law, heresy of heresies!

One example of this mingling Law and Grace, the Body and the Kingdom, are attempted applications of the Sermon on the Mount to the Christian way of life today. Dr. Pentecost did it in his Sermon on the Mount - Contemporary Insight for a Christian Lifestyle. Hodges did it in his The Hungry Inherit - Winning the Wealth of the World to Come. Haddon Robinson wrote the Christian Salt and Light Company - A Contemporary Study of the Sermon on the Mount, plus his similar Solid Rock Construction Company. MacArthur followed with his Kingdom Living Here and Now, and his Gospel According to Jesus.

With Spirit-given insight, Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer pointed out this pervasive error years ago. "There has been a constant disposition on the part of certain writers to invest Old Testament saints with the same positions, qualities, and standing as those which belong to the believers who comprise the Church. And there is more recently a disposition to carry the same realities which belong to the saved of this dispensation over into the Kingdom disposition, and to Jews and Gentiles alike. Such assumptions are avoided when it is recognized that to the Church alone is accorded this heavenly position and glory. Of her alone it is declared that each of her members who make up Christ's Body is made meet to be a partaker of the inheritance of the saints in light." - Systematic Theology 4:327. "Broadly speaking, the Kingdom of God is universal authority of God from everlasting to everlasting, while the term Kingdom of Heaven is fittingly applied to God's rule on the earth. When the vast distinctions between these two spheres of divine authority are observed, there is a solving of many problems in the interpretation of the Bible which otherwise exist." - Systematic Theology 5:316

These vast distinctions have been obliterated, unfortunately, and Dr. Chafer's prophecy has come home to roost. Dallas professor John Martin wrote in The Essays in honor of J. D. Pentecost, page 36, "Most modern dispensationalists see the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Heaven as synonymous", a certain testimony to the movement away from biblical dispensationalism, and the distinctive revelation given to the Apostle Paul.

Error begets error, and the denying of the Kingdom differences has been joined concerning Israel's New Covenant. While he was serving as president of Dallas Seminary, Campbell wrote, "The two opposite viewpoints of pre-millennialism and a-millennialism are still with us, though some modifications are taking place. Some pre-millennialists now view the present Church dispensation as the first phase of the fulfillment of the promised Messianic Kingdom, in that believers now experience the spiritual blessings of the Kingdom, such as the blessings of Israel's new Covenant." - Essays p. 155.

How broad is this divergence? Campbell, Walvoord, Ryrie, Pentecost, Hodges, Johnson, Zuck, Martin, Bock, Blaising, Toussaint, and Robinson, all of the Dallas Seminary taught that the New Covenant blessings belong to the Church, the Body of Christ. So have Whitcomb, Saucy, Kent, and MacArthur. In his book, Dispensationalism and Salvation of the Kingdom, Dr. Saucy wrote, "Many dispensationalists today no longer understand the fulfillment for the Messianic Kingdom announced by Jesus as postponed entirely until the Second Advent. They understand the spiritual salvation of the Kingdom as now available through the work of the disciples of the Kingdom, in a world that has not yet become the Kingdom of Christ to the believer in the Church today. It is difficult to say how much of the contemporary dispensationalism holds this position; although it would seem that the number is considerable and growing, providing a convergence with non-dispensational teaching at this point."

Further, he wrote, in Chriswell Review, "We would suggest that God's historical working is a unified plan. Contrary to traditional dispensationalism, it does not entail separate programs for the Church and Israel, which are somehow ultimately unified only in the display of God's glory in eternity. The present dispensation is not an historical parenthesis which is unrelated to the history which preceded it. Rather it must be viewed as an integral sphere in the development of the mediatorial Kingdom."

Is there not a simple, obvious factor which refutes all this Sermon, Covenant, Kingdom application to the heavenly Body of our Lord Jesus Christ? The Sermon on the Mount, The New Covenant, and the Messianic Kingdom are all legal, belonging to Israel, and earthly, and will be so throughout the millennium and into eternity. Emphasis above in bold by Les Feldick.

The identification of every believer in this present age by the sealing of the Holy Spirit, and the eternal union of the members of His Body with their Head, looks to the heavenly abode. This glorified Church cannot be brought down to Israel's earthly level by a historical, grammatical, exegetical, hermeneutic. Not now or ever, period.

Substituting studies in the Old Testament and the Gospels for the eschatology provided uniquely by the Apostle Paul can never be contributive to sound doctrine for the redeemed today. Body truth must be taught and understood clearly in these last days before His coming. As they are His Body, Paul pleads with believers, "Therefore let us not sleep, as do others, but let us watch and be sober" - 1 Thessalonians 5:6. And "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall they reap to themselves teachers, having itching ears, and they shall turn their ears from truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things...make full proof of your ministry" - 2 Timothy 4:3-5.

You and I, reader friend, may not be equipped to change the current status quo radically today, but we can and must put on the whole armor of God, which begins with truth. Confronting such unbiblical posturing personally and publicly for the good of the redeemed of our day will surely earn a "Well done, good and faithful servant" from our blessed Lord.

THE EVIDENCE FROM PAUL'S WRITINGS - By Les Feldick

We turn now to Paul. Someone had written a letter to the Thessalonian church to the effect that the Day of the Lord was then present, forging Paul's name to the manuscript (2 Thessalonians 2:2). The best Greek texts read: "the Day of the Lord," not "the Day of Christ," as found in the Authorized Version. There is a distinction between the two days.

The Day of the Lord is a technical term used by the Old Testament prophets to designate a certain period with regard to Israel. The expression is used in Lamentations 2:22; Isaiah 2:12; 13:6; 9; 34:8; Jeremiah 46:10; Ezekiel 13:5; 30:3; Joel 1:15; 2:1; 3:14; Amos 5:18; Obadiah 15; Zephaniah 1:7; 8, 18; 2:2-3; Zechariah 14:1; and Malachi 4:5. From a study of these passages, the following should be clear: 1) this day has to do with the nation of Israel, not the Church; 2) the period is still future; 3) the period is one of Judgment upon Israel; 4) it refers to the period of the Great Tribulation, since events that are predicted by the prophets are those that John predicts in the Revelation; and 5) it is the time of the coming of Messiah in judgment.

The day of Christ (Philipppians 1:6, 10) is a New Testament expression, used of the Church and the coming of the Lord Jesus for the Church. The Thessalonian saints thought they had missed the Rapture, and that the persecutions they were enduring were part of the Great Tribulation. Paul writes to assure them that such was not the case. He bases his proof upon the fact that a "falling away" must take place before the Great Tribulation starts.

The phrase "a falling away" is the Authorized Version rendering of apostasia. The verbal form aphistamia from which it comes is present middle of aphistemi, the root verb, which we will study. The simple verb histemi in its intransitive sense means "to stand," the prefixed preposition means "off, away from," and the compound verb, "to stand off from." The word does not mean "to fall." The Greeks had a word for that, pipto: Aphhistemi, in its various uses, is reported by Thayer as follows: "to make stand off, cause to withdraw, to stand off, stand aloof, to desert, to withdraw from one"; in contexts where a defection from the faith is in view, it means "to fall away, become faithless." The verb is rendered by the translators of the Authorized Version "to depart," in Luke 2:32; 4:13; 13:27; Acts 12:10; 15:38; 19:9; 22:29; 2 Corinthians 12:8; 1 Timothy 4:1; 2 Timothy 2:19; Hebrews 3:12. In Luke 8:13 it is translated "fall away," in Acts 5:37, "drew away," and in Acts 5:38, "refrain." Had they translated the word here instead of interpreting it, they would have rendered it by the word "departure." The reader will observe that the predominant translation of the verbal from is "to depart," also, that where it is translated "fall way," the context adds the idea of "falling away" to the verb, which action is still a departure.

E. Schuyler English, to whom this present writer is deeply indebted for calling his attention to the word "departure" as the correct rendering of apostasia in this context; also informs us that the following translators understood the Greek work to mean "a departure" in this context: Tyndale (1534), Coverdale (1535), the Geneva Bible (1537), Cranmer (1539), and Beza (1565), and so used it in their translations. Apostasia is used once more in the New Testament and is translated "to forsake" (A.V.), signifying a departure. The neuter noun apostasion in Matthew 5:31; 19:7; and Mark 10:4 is rendered by the Authorized Version, "divorcement," which word also signifies a departure, here, from antecedent relations.

The writer is well aware of the fact that apostasia was used at times both in classical and koine Greek in the sense of a defection, a revolt in a religious sense, a rebellion against God, and of the act of apostasy. Liddell and Scott in their classical lexicon give the above as the first definition of the word. Moulton and Milligan quote a papyrus fragment where the word means "a rebel." But these are acquired meanings of the word gotten from the context in which it is used, not the original, basic, literal meaning, and should not be imposed upon the word when the context does not qualify the word by these meanings, as in the case of our Thessalonians passage, where the context in which apostasia is embedded does not refer to a defection from the truth, but to the Rapture of the Church. The fact that our word "apostasy" means a defection from the truth is entirely beside the point since we do not interpret Scripture upon the basis of a transliterated word to which a certain meaning has been given, but upon the basis of what the Greek work meant to the first century reader. The fact that Paul in 1 Timothy 4:1 uses this verb in the words "some shall depart from the faith" indicated that the word itself has no such connotation. The translators of the Authorized Version did not translate the word, but offered their interpret of it in its context.

With the translation of the word before us, the next step is to ascertain from the context that to which this departure refers. We note the presence of the Greek definite article before apostasia, of which the translation takes no notice. A Greek word is definite in itself, and when the article is used the exegete must pay particular attention to it. "The basal function of the article is to point out individual identity. It does more than mark 'the object as definitely conceived,' for a substantive in Greek is definite without the article" (Dana and Mantey, A Manual Grammar of the Greek New Testament, p. 137). This departure, whatever it is, is a particular one, one differentiated from all others. Another function of the article is "to denote previous reference. Here the article points out an object the identity of which is defined by some previous reference made to it in the context" (ibid., p. 141). In 2 Thessalonians 2:1 Paul has just spoken about the coming Lord. This coming is defined by the words "our gathering together unto him," not as the Second Advent, but as the Rapture. The Greek word rendered "and" and the translated "even," and the translation reads, "the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, even our gathering together unto him."

The article before apostasia defines that word by pointing to "the gathering together unto him" as that departure. This article determines the context that defines apostasia. The translators took the context of verses 10 - 12 as deciding the significance of the word, but they went too far afield, not grasping the function of the definite article preceding apostasia, which points back to the Rapture of verse 2, not ahead to the refusal to believe the truth of verses 10 - 12. The article is all-important here, as in many instances of its use in the Greek New Testament. In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Paul had given these saints teaching on the Rapture, and the Greek article here points to that which was well known to both the reader and the writer, which is another use of the Greek definite article. Thus, the departure of the Church from earth to heaven must precede the Great Tribulation period.

And we have answered our questions again. It might be added that the reason Paul merely speaks of a Pre-Tribulation Rapture rather than a Pre-70th Week Rapture is that he is addressing himself to the needs of the Thessalonian saints and is not explaining the particular place of the Rapture in the prophetic program of God.

Faithfulness to Our Commission - by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

Faithfulness to Our Commission
Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

In Paul’s day, his “preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery” encountered opposition on every hand. For faithfully proclaiming the glorious message which had been committed to his trust, he was constantly made to bear affliction and reproach. In one of his earlier epistles we already find a long list of the perils and persecutions he had by then been called upon to endure (II Cor. 11:23-33) and this opposition, bitter and relentless, continued throughout his ministry. In his last letter, written from prison in Rome, he calls attention to the distinctive character of his message, and adds:

“Wherein I suffer trouble as an evil doer, even unto bonds…” (II Timmothy 2:7-9).

The almost constant suffering to which the apostle of grace was subjected naturally had its effect upon timid souls. Some, who saw the truth and the glory of his message, lacked the courage to stand with him in making it known. Others, who had started with him were tempted to — and some did — turn back. Of his first appearance before Nero, the Apostle had to say:

“At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: pray God that it may not be laid to their charge” (II Tim. 4:16).

In the light of all this it is not strange that Paul should write to Timothy:

“FOR GOD HATH NOT GIVEN US THE SPIRIT OF FEAR; BUT OF POWER, AND OF LOVE, AND OF A SOUND MIND
.

“BE NOT THOU THEREFORE ASHAMED OF THE TESTIMONY OF OUR LORD, NOR OF ME HIS PRISONER; BUT BE THOU PARTAKER OF THE AFFLICTIONS OF THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE POWER OF GOD” (II Timothy 1:7,8).

Nor is it strange that in II Timothy 2:1-3 the apostle should urge his son in the faith to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” and to “endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ,” especially in the light of the fact that he himself needed constant help in this regard. The average Christian would find it hard to imagine Paul ever needing prayer for courage, yet he closes his Ephesian epistle with the request:

“And [pray] for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

“For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak” (Ephesians 6:19,20).

Oh, that all who have come to see the glory of the gospel of the grace of God would pray this prayer for boldness!

Some may suppose that it would require little boldness today to proclaim grace in all its purity. Who is ever persecuted now, at least in free, enlightened lands, for preaching God’s grace? Ah, but do not be deceived. Satan was no less active in his opposition to the truth when Constantine exalted the professing Church to prominence than when his predecessors persecuted the Church and sent its members to death by fire and sword. Indeed, the devil was doubtless more successful in Constantine’s day than he had been when persecution raged. And does any believer in the Word of God suppose that Satan has relented in his opposition to the truth today, just because men, at least in this land, are not burned at the stake or thrown to the lions? Do not be misled. Satan’s enmity against God and against His Word continues undiminished. His hatred of “the gospel of the grace of God,” is as bitter, and his opposition to it as determined, as it ever was. But well does he know that the constant discouragements connected with being in the minority often succeed in silencing those who would stand against physical persecution.

Let us, who know and love the truth, determine by God’s grace that nothing shall make us unfaithful to our glorious commission; that, whatever the cost, we shall faithfully and boldly proclaim to others the unadulterated gospel of the grace of God, “the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery.”

Mercy Upon All - by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

Have you ever wondered how the pagan world got that way: idol-worshipping, wicked, gripped by superstition and fear?

The Bible supplies the answer in Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Three times in Chapter 1 we read of the Gentile world: “He gave them up… He gave them up… He gave them over….” Why? Because they had given Him up: “And even as they did not wish to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient [becoming]” (Romans 1:28).

It would have been difficult to believe 30 or 40 years ago, that our young people would be dancing to the wild, exotic music of pagan lands (if this can be called music), or that our studios would be selling the twisted, hideous paintings of pagan art (if this can be called art).

When you wonder why the lovely melodies and harmonies of yesteryear have given place to the noise and din of today’s “music”; when you wonder why the beautiful paintings of those days have been largely replaced by the masterpieces of chaos that surround us now — why in so many ways we seem to be reverting to paganism — read Romans 1.

All this is the natural result of a departure from God and His Word. Yet there is hope and assurance and joy in store for any individual who will yet heed the message of God — particularly in the Book of Romans. Here we read how Jew joined Gentile in rejecting Christ, and God had to give them all up. But listen to this passage from Rom. 11:32: “For God hath concluded them all in unbelief THAT HE MIGHT HAVE MERCY UPON ALL.”

That is, He gave up the Jewish and Gentile nations so that He might show His grace to any individuals who might turn to Him by faith in Christ, thus reconciling both (Jewish and Gentile believers) unto Himself in one body, by the cross (Ephesians 2:16).

Things New and Old - by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

Things New and Old
Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

When our Lord had finished His familiar discourse on “the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven,” He said:

“THEREFORE, EVERY SCRIBE WHICH IS INSTRUCTED UNTO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS LIKE A MAN THAT IS AN HOUSEHOLDER, WHO BRINGS FORTH OUT OF HIS TREASURE THINGS NEW AND OLD” (Matthew 13:52).

A new era had just dawned in the world’s history. A new message was being proclaimed. John the Baptist had begun to cry: “Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” and the Lord Jesus and the twelve had taken up the same message.

Some listened eagerly, others turned away — among them many of the scribes, the Bible teachers of the day. They did not welcome any new teaching. Yet Christ’s message of the kingdom in no way conflicted with the Old Testament Scriptures. Indeed, it was based on the Old Testament and confirmed by it. This is why our Lord reminded His hearers that the right kind of scribe would bring forth out of the treasure-house of Scripture, things both new and old.

How this lesson is needed today! Some cast away precious treasures out of the Bible, contending that they are old and out of date. Others, while clinging tenaciously to old truths, reject new light. While mere professors of religion too often cast aside old truths with the complaint that they are outworn, true possessors often reject new light simply because it is new. They vie with each other to be orthodox instead of vying to find more light from the unfathomable Word of God.

PRETERISM --- DON’T YOU BELIEVE IT! - By Les Feldick

Preterism is the theory that all future prophecies were nullified by the "fulfillment" (their word) of Matthew 24:34 where Jesus says, "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled." In other words, preterists try to tell us that 70 AD fulfilled everything. There is nothing left but? - they really don’t say. But if that is the case, how do they explain present day Israel back in the land being prepared for their Messiah.

They claim to be letter perfect in their interpretation of Matthew 23:34, and then proceed to expel or twist all the prophetic things that are still awaiting a future fulfillment. If all future events were fulfilled by titus in 70 AD, then what do they do with the following scriptures? Did any of these things take place before, and up to, 70 AD? An ounce of common sense says, "No."
But if the Preterists’ premise is true, then what do they do with all of these things that have not happened yet?

Acts 1:11 - "...this same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven." - (Bodily, head first, from the Mt. of Olives)
Romans 11:12 - "Now if the fall of them (Israel) be the riches of the world (our gospel of Grace), and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles (our age of Grace); how much more their fulness?" (Israel’s future blessing)

Romans 11:24 - "...how much more shall these, which be the natural branches (Israel), be graffed into their own olive tree?"

Romans 11:25 - "For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery (secret), lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part (for a while) is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles (the Body) be come in."

II Thess. 2:3,4 - "Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day (the Day of the Lord - the Tribulation) shall not come, except there come a falling away (or a departure) first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God."(Compare this with Daniel 11)

II Thess. 2:8 - "And then shall that Wicked (the Anti-christ) be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming."

Jude verses 14 and 15a - "And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all,...."
Now, here are more verses from the Old Testament - Keep asking - "Have/Did these things happen before 70 AD?"

Deut. 30:1,2a - "And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, wither the Lord thy God hath driven thee, And shalt return unto the Lord thy God, and shalt obey his voice...."
Ezek. 37:1-10, 12- (the vision of the dry bones) "Therefore prophesy and say unto them (the whole house of Israel), Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves (the Gentile nations), ...and bring you to the land of Israel."

Ezek. 47:9- "And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh."

Ezek. 47:10- "And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from En-gedi (now a resort on the West shores of the Dead Sea) even unto En-eglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea (Mediterranean), exceeding many."

Daniel 9:27- "And he (the Prince-the Anti-christ) shall confirm the covenant with many for one week (7 years): and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate." (the desolator, the Anti-christ)-(This is the verse Jesus referred to in Matthew 24:15)

Joel 3:2- "I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.

Joel 3:15, 16- "The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel."

Zech. 14:4a- "And his feet (the Lord’s-see verse 3) shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east...." (Compare that with previously quoted Acts 1:11 - He left head first - He returns feet first.)

Zech. 14:8- "And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half toward the hinder sea (Dead Sea): in summer and in winter shall it be." (Compare with previously quoted Ezek. 47:9 and 10.)

Zech. 14:9- "And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one."

These are just a few of the scriptures that refer to future events that could not have taken place before 70 AD.

So, what do Preterists do with all this? They simply throw them out or twist them so completely that they change their meaning. And what does Scripture say about people who twist Scripture?

II Peter 3:16- "As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction."

Living Beyond Offense - By the late Pastor Lloyd Peterson

Living Beyond Offense
By the late Pastor Lloyd Peterson

1 Corinthians 10:23.33

Paul warned against alliance with the world. He declared That in Christ Jesus we are 'one bread' (loaf) Verse 17. Therefore we must not be in union with any other pagan or non-Christian fellowship. In fact, he states this to be impossible, 'Ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils'; Verse 21.

In this lesson before us we, as Christians, are urged to live above offense; offense to our fellow men and God. A key verse for proper living is verse 31: 'Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. '

Anyone who knows the grace of God and the Word of God, knows we are not under the law. Legalists may chant all they wish, condemn and blaspheme the message of grace as they choose, but the fact remains: we are in no way under law. A woman is never under the rule of a man she has never married. We, as Gentiles, have never been under the law. The law was given only to Israel. Psalm 147:19-20: 'He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord!

In fact, since Calvary Israel is free from the law. Romans 7:4 declares: 'Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God' Now when a man's wife is dead, that man has the moral right to remarry, and in this case, the law having been set aside, the sinner is invited to be married or united to another; to the risen Christ.  It is for this reason that Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10:23, 'All things are lawful for me, ' and this is so; 'but all things are not expedient....all this edify not, ' i. e., they do not build us up.

In this light the great apostle invites the believer in the Corinthian Church to be considerate of two persons as he lives in the midst of a pagan world, FIRST -- be considerate of a weaker brother. 'For conscience sake.....conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other.' Verses 28-29.

What you do may not brother your conscience, but it might another's. It is not proper to say 'I'll let my conscience be my guide!' This may be unchristian, for often we must let another's conscience be our guide. 'Take a little wine for thy stomach's sake and for thine oft infirmities', Paul tells Timothy. This, therefore, is in order maybe, depending on the conscience of others. It would not do here because of Christian conscience in this land; where Timothy lived it was no offense. But we do not live in Asia. The conscience of others is a great factor in what we do and say. I have often heard Christians say, 'I don't care what others think, I'm going to do it anyway.' If this be your attitude you are out of fellowship with your Savior. You are an offense to another member of his precious body.

SECONDLY- be considerate of your Lord and Master. If He is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all. Paul's cry rings down through the ages: 'Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.' God help us to test all of our conduct with this spiritual axiom. If you can do what you are doing to the glory of God, then you are at liberty to do it.  Someone asked Spurgeon if you could smoke to the glory of God? (For he smoked at that time) He said 'yes'. Some students made placards which read: 'Spurgeon can smoke to the glory of God.' He read just one. Spurgeon quite smoking. Do you not see? It was an offense both to man and God.

The need today in the Christian world is a walk that is different from the world. One of joy and peace. A life constantly in tune with heaven. One that spells salvation to an unbelieving world. A life that is not an offense, 'neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God.' Verse 32. God help us to do as Paul says: 'Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.'
