The Three L's

If you were asked to pick your three favorite words or to pick three words that have the most meaning to you, what would they be? Let's briefly consider three that begin with the letter "L."

Live

Yes, "live" is a very meaningful word, but do we really know what it means? The Apostle Paul said,

"For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Phil. 1:21)

There can be no real life apart from the Lord. Christ is our life. He said,

"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh to the Father but by me." (John 14:6)

Living with and for the Lord makes life meaningful. It also gives life a future for the life God gives is eternal. Someone once said, "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward.

"

Love

This is the most popular word in every language or vocabulary. Some have even called it a universal language in itself. There is no question of its importance in knowing God and His Word. The most familiar passage of the Bible probably is John 3:16. But let us not forget I John 3:16, and that we are told in I John 4:8,

"He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."

Isn't it wonderful that,

"God commendeth His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners; Christ died for us." (Rom. 5:8)

Learn

We should be yearnmg for learning, so we can be earning. However, we have to be reminded that learning can be bad as well as good. Also, we had better be very careful not only what we learn, but from whom we learn. There are many, many false teachers in the world system.

Some learning takes place naturally, like a baby nursing. Some comes from experience, like putting your finger on a hot stove. Most comes from applying our hearts unto wisdom.

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (II Tim. 2:15)

The noble Bereans of Acts 17:11 "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily whether those things were so." Learning is a process whereby we learn about life as God has prepared it. Knowledge without God's wisdom puffeth up (blows up like a balloon) and a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; but fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Prov. 1:7)

"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils" (1 Tim. 4:1).

"But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived" (2 Tim. 3:13).

In the last days of grace, there will be two areas for which to be especially watchful in regard to those who minister the Word. Paul warns us that some, but not all, will depart from the faith that was once near and dear to their hearts. They will abandon the sound doctrine that was first delivered to us by the Apostle Paul and will instead give heed to seducing spirits. As they teach things that are contrary to Paul's gospel, it will cause a great deal of confusion among the brethren, which is a masterful ploy of Satan, who is the author of confusion. But why would these teachers knowingly depart from the truth? The reasons are many and varied: notoriety for discovery of a so-called new truth, wider acceptance in mainstream Christendom, larger numbers, and other temptations of fleshly, earthly gain.

The level of confusion increases dramatically when we add ministers who intentionally deceive the unsuspecting to build a utopian or cultlike ministry. Paul says they have "a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof" (2 Tim. 3:5). In a word, they will deny the preaching of the Cross, which is the power of God unto salvation (Rom. 1:16; 1 Cor. 1:18). Those who come under their spell will have their ears tickled with inspirational messages, but there will be a deafening silence when it comes to the deity of Christ, the virgin birth, or Christ's precious blood.

The apostle is clear to all who will listen when he says, "from such turn away." If you fail to do so, you will be swept into what is either their unsound teaching or a web of deception. Beware! Paul's solution to avoid these dangers is really quite simple: "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them" (2 Tim. 3:14). In a nutshell, follow Paul as he followed Christ. A well-rounded understanding of Paul's epistles will be a safeguard against error and will protect you from being misled or succumbing to the clever schemes of men.

It is not only difficult, but really impossible for anyone to fully grasp the meaning of eternity. No one really knows when time began and when time will end. No man saw the beginning, nor can any man see the end. The only thing we can say with certainty about eternity is that it never stands still. We just have to trust God that He knows because He was there when time began and He will be in existence forever. Habakkuk exclaimed in Habakkuk 1:12, “Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One?”

The Scriptures teach that God’s power is eternal (Rom. 1:20), His purposes are eternal (Eph. 3:11); and His wonderful Person is eternal (I Tim. 1:17).

In the wonderful prayer of our Lord recorded in John 17, Jesus said, “And this is life eternal, that they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent” (vs. 3). In other words, everlasting life is to know God, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom He sent. But how do we get to “know” God and Jesus Christ?

We get to “know” God by believing what He has said. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” When we receive the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, He gives us His life, which is eternal. He said in John 14:19, “Because I live, ye shall live also.” God led Paul to write in Colossians 3:3-4, “For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

One of the most familiar truths in the Scripture is that which Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:7, “Ye must be born again.” Jesus knew the natural man would die. Hebrews 9:27 states, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” Only the life that God gives when we believe on the Lord Jesus is eternal. What do we believe concerning the Lord Jesus ? The gospel that saves is simply stated: “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” (I Cor. 15:3-4)

Eternal not only refers to the duration of the life that God gives, but also to its quality. It not only speaks of a future position but also of a very present reality. And wonder of wonders, it cannot be lost or taken from us! Jesus said in John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Our eternal life is in God’s hand, not ours. Our assurance depends on God’s faithfulness, not on our weakness. Paul was led to write, “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” (II Tim. 1: 12).

"How is Christ the Savior of all men, specially of them that believe?"

"...the living God...is the Savior of all men, specially of those that believe" (1 Tim. 4:10).

"...the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world" (1 John 4:14), but "it pleased God...to save them that believe" (1 Cor. 1:21). So God is the potential Savior of all, and the particular Savior of all that believe. Righteousness is offered "unto all," but it only comes "upon all them that believe" (Rom. 3:22).

But in the context of 1 Timothy 4:10, it is possible Paul had even more than this in mind. In Verse 16, he told Timothy:

"Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee."

Since Timothy was already saved from his sins, Paul must be saying he could save himself and his hearers from all the misery and heartache that not taking heed to Pauline doctrine always brings. Unsaved men can benefit from this kind of salvation as well.

Remember, a few verses earlier, Paul told believers that "godliness is profitable... having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come" (v. 8). Every believer knows that living a godly life will yield the profit of rewards at the Judgment Seat of Christ in the life to come. But godliness also profits richly in this life as well. Berean Bible Society founder Pastor C. R. Stam used to say that if he died and found out that Christianity was all a lie, that there was no life after death or rewards in the life to come, he wouldn't regret a moment of the life he had lived, for it is the richest, most rewarding and satisfying life that can be lived.

But even unbelievers know by experience that "the way of transgressors is hard" (Prov. 13:15), and that "virtue is its own reward." So Christ can save them from misery and heartache as well, as they inadvertantly take heed to "the doctrine that is according to godliness" (1 Tim. 6:3).

And so, just as the sun and the rain that God gives all men can save unsaved men from the deprivation they would know without these things in life (Matt. 5:45; Acts 17:17), adhering to Christian principles can save unsaved men from misery and heartache in life. That makes God "the Savior of all men," but specially of them that believe, for them that believe will also be saved from an eternity in the lake of fire in the life which is to come.

Grace, And How This Affects Us -

Ask the average believer what the Bible word “grace” means, and he will doubtless reply, “unmerited favor”.

Actually, however, grace is much more than this.

Subjectively, it is that loving attitude, or disposition, on God’s part, from which all His kindness toward us flows.

Objectively, it is all the kindness that flows from His love toward us.

Thus we read in Ephesians 2:2-6 that we were “the children of disobedience” and therefore “by nature the children of wrath, even as others”.

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

Note: This passage begins with those who were “children of disobedience” and “children of wrath” and, saving them “by grace,” gives them a position in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus!

God’s grace to us as sinners was great indeed, for:

“In [Christ] we have redemption through His blood, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS [God’s] GRACE.”

But now, having given us a position in His beloved Son, God’s grace goes out to us in still greater measure.

Ephesians 1:6 declares that God has “made us accepted [Lit., 'engraced us’] in the Beloved”.

Beholding us in Christ, God loves us and delights in us more than any father ever delighted in his son, or any grandfather in that precious grandchild.

Thus, while in Ephesians 1:7 we read that we have “redemption… the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace”, in Ephesians 2:7 we see these riches of grace increased to us “exceedingly”, now that we occupy a position “in the Beloved”:

“That in the ages to come He might show THE EXCEEDING RICHES OF HIS GRACE…”

How?

“…in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus”!

What a prospect! Through the ages of eternity God will lavish His loving kindness upon us to demonstrate to all the universe “the exceeding riches of His grace”!

Doth the future hold in store!
By the wildest flights of fancy
Thou couldst never ask for more.

Heir of God; joint heir forever
With His own beloved Son
God could not to you have promised
More of bliss than He has done!”

The Cat's Out of the Bag

Did you ever wonder how the figure of speech found in our title came to be used for the revealing of a secret? Some say it goes back to a time when piglets were sold in bags in open-air markets. In those days, an unscrupulous merchant might sell an unsuspecting patron a bag containing a cat instead of a piglet, and it wasn't until the hapless patron got home that the cat was out of the bag, and the merchant's dishonest secret was revealed. And since cats have always been far less valuable than pigs, the patron was always less than thrilled to learn that the pork he thought he had purchased was only pork substitute!

Well, beginning with the ministry of the Apostle Paul, an infinitely more pleasing secret was revealed!

"Paul... an apostle... in hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began... But hath in due times manifested His word through preaching, which is committed unto me..." (Titus 1:1-3).

If you're not sure what that word "manifested" means, it is well defined in something the Lord said:

"...nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest, neither any thing hid, that shall not be known..." (Luke 8:17).

So to make something manifest means to make known something that was secret or hidden.

That certainly applies to the promise of eternal life that God made to a Gentile like Titus! God promised the Jews eternal life throughout the pages of the Old Testament, and Gentiles who wanted to get saved in those days had to get in on that promise by becoming "proselytes" (Acts 2:10). But Paul was raised up to reveal that Gentiles no longer had to become Jews to get the eternal life that God promised the Jews. Paul revealed that Gentiles had their own promise of eternal life, one that God made before the world began, but didn't let the cat out of the bag until Paul came along.

Humorist Will Rogers is said to have quipped, "Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than putting it back in." If you've ever released a cat that somehow managed to get trapped in a bag, you know he's right! But there are many who are trying to put Paul's cat back in the bag. That is, there are many who hold that Gentiles who want to be saved today must still try to get in on Israel's promise of eternal life by keeping the Law that God gave them through Moses. Others insist that Gentiles who want to be saved must submit to water baptism "for the remission of sins," as Peter told "the men of Israel" at Pentecost (Acts 2:38,22).

If you're an unsaved Gentile, don't you fall for it! God promised you eternal life long before the Law was given, and the apostle who revealed this promise says that eternal life can't be obtained by the "works of righteousness" of the Law (Tit. 3:5). He further declares that it is "by the washing of regeneration" (Tit. 3:5) that we are saved, and not the washing of water baptism. The "regeneration" or new birth of which he speaks is yours "by grace...through faith" (Eph. 2:8), faith in the fact that Christ died for your sins, and rose again (I Cor. 15:1-4).

And if you're an unsaved Jew, things have changed for you too! Just as Gentiles who wanted to be saved in time past had to look to Moses, the spiritual leader of the Jews, and be saved through the Law, so Jews who want to be saved today must look to Paul, "the apostle of the Gentiles" (Rom. 11:13), and be saved by grace through faith. That's how the Body of Christ came to be made up of Jews and Gentiles (I Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:28)!

So whether you're a Jew or a Gentile, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved" (Acts 16:31).
