THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT ... IS JOY By IVAN L. BURGENER, Pastor

 Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:22

"But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."

"Joy" is the second of these nine manifestations of the "fruit of the spirit." These are to be virtues characteristic of the believer's life. These are "fruit" of the spirit, but of what "spirit"? Perhaps your translation seems to indicate God's "Holy Spirit" is meant because of the capitalized "S." But many translations, including the 1611 Edition of the King James Version, had no such capital here. And since the Greek language offers no help by any such rules of capitalization, we are left to the internal evidence of the text and the context to determine just what "spirit" is meant.

Help is not far to seek if we notice that the "fruit of the spirit" is in sharp contrast with the "works of the flesh" mentioned in verse 19 above. These sixteen listed works are just the start of a seemingly endless list of manifestations of the flesh, that is the "old Adamic nature." Paul cannot say of these, "against such there is no law"! The Law of Moses clearly condemned them all in its ministry of pointing out sin for what it really was. No wonder "the law was not made for a righteous man .. ,"

Our text clearly contrasts the old and new natures and calls them by the names "flesh" and "spirit" respectively. And while the law clearly condemned the "works of the flesh, that same law had nothing to say about the "fruit of the spirit" or the new nature in which the Galatian believers were to "walk." Thus will joy be one of the spiritual virtues filling our lives as we walk manifesting our new natures, being subject to God and His Word!

Don't Dote On Personalities - by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

Don't Dote On Personalities
Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

When Paul instructs Timothy to charge his followers not to “give heed” to “endless genealogies” (I Tim. 1:4), he refers to the status symbol of the personality of his day.

Recently this writer was informed by a correspondent from an eastern state that it appeared that he might be related to a Revolutionary general named Stam — and, did we wish him to investigate further! We replied that we were far too excited about where we were going to care much about where we had come from!

While there are some in our day who are very proud of their ancestry and have coats of arms displayed in their homes, the average Christian probably, has never had his family tree traced back very far. But in Paul’s day genealogies were very important, even among believers. One’s family relationships meant a great deal. If you were a second cousin to Christ or even a third cousin to Peter you “had it made.” You might be crude, or stupid, or even wicked, but all this was overlooked: you were closely related to Christ Himself or to the Apostle Peter and all were ready to give you audience.

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD AND DEATH - By Paul Hume

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD AND DEATH
 By Paul Hume

Scripture Reading: James 4:13-17; Psalms 31:15; Job 14:5

"The clock of life is wound but once,
And no one has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour."

When will I die? When will you die? No one has answer to these questions because our blessed, all-wise, sovereign Lord, who is "the God of the spirits of all flesh" (Num. 16:.22; Heb. 12:9), holds the number of our very months and days, as well as years, in His power. We are not born of mere natural accident--even though many are born out of wedlock and the like. We are born to fit into the purposes of God. Our time of birth as well as I time of our death is in His counsels. Little wonder the devout Psalmist could state, "My times are in thy hand" (Psalms 31:15).

Therefore, how pointed is the inspired advice James: "Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we  are going to such and such a city and stay a year, go into, business and make money,' although you do not have the slightest knowledge of tomorrow. What is the nature of your life? It is really nothing but a mist which appears for a little while and then disappears. Instead, you ought to say, 'If the Lord is willing, we shall live and do this or that.'  But, as it is, you boast of your proud pretensions. All such boasting is wicked" (William Trans.).

"Unto God the Lord," declared the Psalmist, "belong the issues from death" (68:20). Since HE "giveth and taketh away" (Job 1:21), what can we do but live in holy, submission to His will, and live a day at a time, seeking to be wise, "redeeming the time" for "the time is short" (Eph. 5:15,16, 1 Corinthians 7:29)? Are YOU ready should the Lord be pleased to remove YOU by way of death TODAY?

APPRECIATION, NOT DEPRECIATION By Miles Stanford

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly" "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly"

As believers we rejoice in the fact that the Lord Jesus died for us, but few are affected by the fact that He arose for us. Fewer still realize that we died and arose with Him. Learn the facts! There will be continual struggle and failure until we gain adequate understanding of the liberating truth.

"The Lord Jesus on the Cross removed the barriers which separated me from God - my guilt, my sin, the law; and He dealt with my enemies - the world, the flesh, the devil. These six things were dealt with, so that we need no longer be in bondage through fear and that we may come boldly to the throne of grace.

"Have we given a hearty assent to these things which the Lord Jesus did for us? Or have we, as we read the Word, drifted by them, taking it all for granted? Let us lay hold of that for which God has laid hold of us. Let us gird up the loins of our mind and consent to that which He did for us. Let us enter into all that which being united to Christ as our Life means. Let us rejoice in all that was accomplished for us on Calvary."

"It is necessary that the truth conferred by grace should be known as a possession and the virtue of it apprehended, before there can be any walk in keeping with it. For if there be ignorance or misapprehension, the truer the conscience, the more defective is the practice." -

"Set your affection on things above" (Colossians 3:2)

WHEREIN IS EXCESS By Pastor Bob Hanna

Many denominational churches teach that to let so much as a drop of alcoholic beverage pass one's lips constitutes a mortal sin. This is not found in Scripture. Christ's first recorded miracle refutes this teaching. Jesus and his disciples were invited to attend a marriage in Cana of Galilee. Those in the wedding party desired wine, and Jesus obliged. "And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And He saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine ... " (John 2:6-9).

The apostle Paul advised, "Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess" (Ephesians 5:18). He didn't say, "Don't drink wine". He simply warned against over indulgence. When enumerating the qualifications of church officials, Paul said that they should be "not given to much wine" (l Timothy 3:8). "Of the elder women as wives and mothers, he wrote the same advice - that they be "not given to much wine" (Titus 2:3). Crediting wine with medicinal properties, Paul recommended to Timothy, "Use a little wine for thy stomach's sake, and thine often infirmities" (l Timothy 5:23).

Throughout Biblical history, wine was a customary beverage. Wine and strong drink were not disapproved as such; It was their abusive use that was unacceptable. Wine was used in celebrations, taken as medicinal potion, made part of ceremonial occasions and imbibed socially. We are cautioned to "abstain from all appearance of evil" (I Thessalonians 5:22). Because so many believers are sincerely convinced that any consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden, we may be well advised not to partake, observing the principle set forth by the apostle: 'Wherefore, if meat (or wine) make my brother to offend, I will eat (drink) no flesh (wine) while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend" (I Corinthians 8:13).

Does Misery Love Company? by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

Does Misery Love Company?
Pastor Cornelius R. Stam

We have all heard the statement: “Misery loves company.” It is true that when one is sick or in trouble he does not feel quite so sorry for himself when he realizes that others are as unfortunate, and perhaps more so, than he.

However, some have used this phrase: “Misery loves company,” in speaking lightly of hell. Perhaps you have heard someone say: “Well, if I go to hell, at least I’ll have lots of company.” This is true, but the company the lost will have when cast out of God’s presence will hardly afford them comfort.

The Bible story of the rich man and Lazarus brings this fact out with great force. The rich man, you will remember, “fared sumptuously every day,” while Lazarus “was laid at his gate, full of sores, desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table.”

In the process of time both died, and the rich man, having felt no need of salvation, suddenly was made to experience God’s wrath upon sin, for the sacred record says: “In hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments” (Luke 16:23). From his place of torment the rich man saw Lazarus with Abraham “afar off,” but this surely afforded little comfort, while we do read that “Lazarus was comforted.” The rich man, then, still with haughty superiority, asked Abraham to send Lazarus back to earth to warn his five brothers, “lest they come into this place of torment.” He did not wish his brothers to join him in hell. “Misery” among those cast out of God’s presence, then, does not “love company.”

The story is brought to a close as Abraham refuses the rich man’s request, explaining that if his brothers would not hear the Word of God “neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead” (Luke 16:31).

The way to avoid the lot of the rich man, then, is to believe the Word of God, particularly that part of the Word which tells how Christ died for our sins that we might be justified by grace through faith. Don’t be deceived by the old adage: “Misery loves company.” Receive Christ as your Savior today.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

THE INSPIRED WORD OF GOD - By H. Steinbron

Scripture Reading: II Timothy 3: 16·17

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God".... It is so good to have this clear and absolute statement of what every redeemed one knows, namely, that we have all the Scripture, and all of the Scripture is breathed out to us from the creative breath of God. We must never come under the influence of any unbeliever who casts doubt upon the extent, content, or origin of the Holy Scriptures.

True believers do not corrupt the Word of God because they know God has given His Word by inspiration.  This word "inspiration" means that God controlled the human writer of Scripture in such a way that the WORDS were put down exactly as God wanted man to have them. These inspired words are therefore infallible and inerrant, which is another way of saying that they are perfect and have no errors connected with them whatsoever. The Bible may deal with numbers, history, science, chronology, the knowledge of God, or man's salvation; and we should be sure that there is no mistake in the words.

True believers reverence the Word of God for many reasons. (I) "...man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God" (Luke 4:4). (2) The Bible is the RECORD that God gave concerning His Son (I John 5:9-11). (3) God has magnified His Word above all His name (Psalm 138:2).

True believers should be taught that the Word cannot be lost or changed. Listen to the testimony of I Peter 1:25. " ... the Word of the Lord endureth for ever." Is this Word in heaven or some far away place where man cannot get all of the Scripture? No, it is "the Word" which is preached unto you! The inspired Word of God!

The Lamb, The Lion, the Lord - By John LaVier

The Lamb, The Lion, the Lord
 By John LaVier

(Written December 1951)

In the seventh chapter of Daniel the Gentile world kingdoms are likened to wild ravenous beasts. They are bestial in character, and bite and devour one another. Even in our day the nations take for themselves as a symbol of their might some wild beast. Russia has the bear, Britain the lion, and our own United States the eagle, a bird of prey with cruel beak and claws. In contrast to these stands the symbol of God's kingdom, a Lamb. The Lamb is the subject of much of the Bible. Peter speaks of the Lamb foreordained before the foundation of the world, but manifest in those last times for Israel. In the Old Testament the Lamb is typified and prophesied; in the Four Gospels the Lamb is identified and personified; while in the book of Revelation, where the Lamb is mentioned twenty-seven times, He is magnified and glorified.

In the slaying of the lamb and the applying of its blood to the doors on that memorable Passover night, is a clear picture of God's Lamb, who would come to lay down His life and shed His blood for the deliverance of His people. Then the tens of thousands of animal sacrifices offered upon Jewish altars for the sins of the people also spoke of the Lamb who was to be wounded for their transgressions and bruised for their iniquities. In the fulness of time He came, and John, whose mission was to make the Christ manifest to Israel, pointed Him out to that nation with the words, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." Finally, in fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy, He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth. It was for this He came, born as the Lamb in the stable, to suffer and die on the tree for the sins of lost mankind.

Behold! a spotless Victim dies,
My Surety on the tree;
The Lamb of God, the Sacrifice,
He gave Himself for me!
The Lion

Coincidental with the prophecies concerning the Lamb were those concerning the Lion. Two lines of prophecy run through the Old Testament; the crimson line which speaks of the Lamb and the tree, and the purple line which speaks of the Lion and the throne. These both relate to the same Person but to the two advents of that Person. The two lines sometimes seemed to merge, which at times perplexed the prophets themselves. Peter states of the prophets who prophesied of the salvation and grace that should come to Israel: "Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow" (1 Pet. 1:11). The Lamb relates to the sufferings of Christ, and the Lion relates to the glory that was to follow.

At His first coming Christ was the Lamb to suffer and die. But God raised Him from the dead and now He sits at the Father's right hand, "from henceforth expecting till His enemies be made His footstool" (Heb. 10:13). Thank God, He is coming back again! Then He will come as the Kingly One, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. Then He will sit upon the throne of David, ruling and reigning in righteousness. The government will be upon His shoulder, and "of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever" (Isa. 9:7). The zeal of Jehovah of hosts, not the zeal of the United Nations, will perform this.

We often are so interested in singing "O that will be glory for me" that we forget that there is coming a day of glory for Him. Praise His dear Name! Coronation Day is coming! He will return as the Lion, to be crowned, not with thorns, but with many diadems. Not then to be spit upon, and despised and rejected of men, but to have every knee bow in His presence and every tongue hail Him as King of kings.

Our Lord is now rejected,
And by the world disowned,
By the many still neglected,
And by the few enthroned;
But soon He'll come in glory!
The hour is drawing nigh,
For the crowning day is coming
By and by.
The Lord

Though all the above is blessedly true, it is certainly significant that the apostle of the Gentiles never once speaks of either the Lamb or the Lion, but almost three hundred times he uses the title Lord. Christ is the Lamb and the Lion in His association with Israel. As the Lamb He was taken out of the flock, and Israel was Jehovah's flock and the sheep of His pasture. The Lamb's wife, the bride, is Israelitish, as we see in Revelation 21:9-14, where we find the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles of the Lamb. As the Lion, Christ is of the kingly tribe of Judah, and heir to David's throne. To us who are members of His Body, though, He is the Lord. He is our Lord Jesus Christ.

Many believers are guilty of taking the Lord's name in vain. Many call Him Lord but do not really own His Lordship over their lives. Of such, Christ asks, "Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luke 6:46). As Lord He is supreme in authority, which is what the word "kurios" means. Thus He is to be obeyed implicitly and without any reservations, for if He is not Lord of all, then He is not Lord at all. One of the sevenfold unities of Ephesians 4 is "One Lord." However, there are many Diotrephes even today, who love to have the preeminence, and who have set themselves up as being lords over God's heritage, But "we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake" (2 Cor. 4:5). "To us there is but one God, the Father, and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him" (1 Cor. 8:6).

Our Lord Jesus Christ has now been raised up far above all rule, and authority, and power, and dominion. He is seated in the heavenlies at God's right hand, and God "hath put all things under His feet, and given Him to be the Head over all things to the church, which is His Body" (Eph. 1:22). As Head of the Body, far above all, He is in a place of absolute authority. All that we do as members of His Body should be done in subservience to His divine will. "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus ... And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance; for ye serve the Lord Christ" (Col. 3:17, 23, 24).

Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball,
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all.
