Fruit That Abounds - by Pastor Paul M. Sadler "Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account" (Phil. 4:17). How the Apostle Paul rejoiced on behalf of the Church at Philippi in their labors of love! This faithful church in their love for Paul and the message of Grace more than once had come to the Apostle's aid. They participated in his sufferings and necessities in sending him financial relief. At Macedonia, their giving advanced the work of the Lord in the furtherance of the Gospel of the Grace of God (v. 15). At Thessalonica, their sending of a timely offering enabled Paul to flee Thessalonica and seek refuge at Berea (v. 16 cf. Acts 17:1-10). This is what prompted Paul to say, "Not because I desire a gift." Paul was not greedy or seeking personal gain, but he desired fruit that might abound to their account. The word fruit is used in the Scriptures to denote results or that which is produced. To quote one author by way of example, "We speak of 'Punishment as the fruit of sin,' 'Poverty as the fruit of idleness,' and 'Happiness as the fruit of a virtuous life.'" Here we see sin produces punishment; idleness produces poverty; and a virtuous life produces happiness, so in the case of the Philippian believers, faithfulness produces reward. The Apostle Paul rejoiced for them in their acts of kindness and faithfulness in service for Christ. The Apostle desired that their acts of kindness in providing for his needs might be put to their account, that at the Judgment Seat of Christ, they might be richly rewarded and reap the benefits of their fruitfulness. Would the great Apostle be able to commend our Grace Churches of the present as he did the Church at Philippi? Are we standing in the defense and confirmation of the Gospel as they did? The Sins That Are Past -

In Chapter 3 of St. Paul’s letter to the Romans he declares that God has set forth Christ as a satisfaction for man’s sin and that redemption is obtained by faith in “His blood,” or His payment for sin at Calvary, entirely apart from works, religious or otherwise (Rom. 3:21-26).
But in this same passage he states that this “remission” concerns the “sins that are past” (Ver. 25). What does he mean by this? Some have taught from this verse that when a sinner turns to God for salvation all his sins are forgiven up to that time and now that he is saved he is henceforth responsible for himself. But this would mean that God saves men by His grace only to turn them over again to their own weak and sinful natures. If this were the case, the converted sinner would be lost again the same day, for what Christian believer is wholly free from sin?
Paul rather looks back here at past ages and declares that we now know and proclaim that men like Abel, Noah and Abraham, and also like Moses, David and Daniel (who lived under the Law) were actually saved by the redemption wrought by Christ, although Christ’s death was still future in their day. In other words, Christ died, not only for the sins which we have committed, but also for the “sins which are past.” The believers of past ages simply believed what God told them then, and God counted them righteous (Gen. 15:6) on the basis of Christ’s coming payment for sin.
We have the same truth set forth in Hebrews 9:15, where we are told that Christ’s death availed also “for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant,” i.e., the Law.
How blessed we are to live at a time when God’s plan of salvation has been fully revealed, and that we can now look to the Lord Jesus Christ and exclaim with Paul:
“He loved me, and gave Himself for me!” (Gal. 2:20).

In Ephesians 1:13 the Apostle Paul declares that men are saved and sealed by hearing and believing “the Word of truth, the gospel of your salvation.” This declaration is substantiated by many other passages of Scripture. Our Lord said: “He that heareth… and believeth… hath everlasting life” (John 5:24). This at a time when sacrifices and baptism were still required for the remission of sins. Even then men had to hear and believe to be saved, for “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).

Now, however, salvation is received by hearing and believing alone. Works for salvation are not merely unnecessary; they are forbidden. Today salvation is “to him that worketh not, but believeth” (Romans 4:5). “For by grace are ye saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8,9).

God has changed His dealings with men from time to time down through the ages, teaching one lesson at a time. This is why it is so important to note the dispensational distinctions in Scripture, “rightly dividing the Word of truth.”

Once the works of the Law were required for salvation: “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested” (Romans 3:21) and men are saved solely by faith in Christ, “being justified freely by [God’s] grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24). We are saved, then, as we hear and believe what Paul calls, “the Word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (Ephesians 1:13), and we are established in the faith as we obey II Timothy 2:15: “rightly dividing the Word of truth.”

These two verses have caused much confusion amongprofessing believers. Many have doubted their salvationbecause they were unable to exhibit any of these signs. It doessay, "These signs shall follow them that believe." The wordsshall follow" mean to follow side by side or accompany.Therefore, if verse 15 (which says "Go ye into all the world andpreach the gospel to every creature") is the marching ordersor the believer today; then these signs should accompany them. Many have attemptedto handle poisonous snakes anddrink poison, trying to prove these verses. Some have paid forthis mistake dearly!


All the confusion and doubt cast upon salvation can becleared up when we see that this was the Gospel of theKingdom. With the setting aside of Israel and the Gospel ofthe Kingdom (Romans 11:25), the accompanying signs wereset aside also. One of the signs mentioned in verse 17 isspeaking in "new tongues." In I Corinthians 13:8, theScriptures reveal that tongues were to "cease." With thecompletion of the revelation of the mystery (Colossians 1:25),tongues did cease. Not only that, but all the sign gifts ceased.We are saved today by God's matchless grace apart fromworks of any kind. This includes the working of miraculousgifts also. We need no authenticating sign to assure oursalvation. God's completed Word assures that if we believehat Christ died for our sins and arose again on account of ourjustification, "The Spirit Himself beareth witness with ourSpirit, that we are the children of God" (Romans 8:16).

The Fruits Of The Resurrection-

The fruits of our Lord’s resurrection from the dead are many and important.
First, there were immediate results. It silenced those who had ridiculed His claims, and struck terror into their hearts. It explained how the prophecies would be fulfilled which predicted the death of Christ and the kingdom glory to follow. It heartened His followers, making cowards bold, turning their fear into faith, their sorrow into joy and their despair into glorious victory.
Then there were also long range results, for our Lord’s resurrection is a warning to unbelievers:
“Because [God] hath appointed a day in the which He will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead” (Acts 17:31. See also John 5:22,27; Acts 10:42).
As to believers, first, Christ’s resurrection from the dead assures us that our debt of sin has been fully paid:
“[HE] WAS DELIVERED FOR OUR OFFENCES, AND WAS RAISED AGAIN FOR OUR JUSTIFICATION. THEREFORE BEING JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST” (Rom. 4:25; 5:1).
Second, His resurrection gives us a living Savior to help us in our daily walk.
“WHEREFORE HE IS ABLE ALSO TO SAVE THEM TO THE UTTERMOST THAT COME UNTO GOD BY HIM, SEEING HE EVER LIVETH TO MAKE INTERCESSION FOR THEM” (Heb. 7:25).
Third, His resurrection is the pledge of our own:
“FOR IF WE BELIEVE THAT JESUS DIED AND ROSE AGAIN, EVEN SO THEM ALSO WHICH SLEEP IN JESUS WILL GOD BRING [FROM THE DEAD] WITH HIM” (I Thes. 4,14; cf. Heb. 13:20).
“BLESSED BE THE GOD AND FATHER OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST WHO, ACCORDING TO HIS ABUNDANT MERCY, HATH BEGOTTEN US AGAIN UNTO A LIVING HOPE BY THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD” (I Pet. 1:3).

Many people have a mistaken notion that a dispensation is a period of time. This is not so, however, for the word “dispense” means simply “to deal out”. The word “dispensation”, then, means “the act of dispensing or dealing out”, or “that which is dispensed or dealt out”.
There are medical dispensaries, for example, where medicines are dispensed to the poor. Sometimes these dispensations are conducted on a particular day of each week. Such a dispensation of medicine may take a full twelve hours each week, but it does not follow from this that a dispensation is a period of twelve hours! It is rather the act of dispensing or that which is dispensed.
The word “dispensation” is used many times in the Bible, although it is not always translated the same way. In Ephesians 3:2, Paul writes of “the dispensation of the grace of God, which is given me to you-ward”. God had committed to him wonderful message of grace to dispense to others. Thus we read in Acts 20:24 his stirring words, spoken in the face of persecution and death:
“But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, AND THE MINISTRY WHICH I HAVE RECEIVED OF THE LORD JESUS, TO TESTIFY THE GOSPEL OF THE GRACE OF GOD.”
The “gospel” or “good news” of the grace of God: This was the dispensation committed to Paul for us by the risen, ascended Lord. This is always Paul’s message.
“Where sin abounded GRACE did much more abound…the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His GRACE… justified freely by His GRACE, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…by GRACE are ye saved, through faith” (Rom.5:20; Eph.1:7; Rom.3:24; Eph. 2:8,9).

The One True Church

Religious people — even sincere Christian people — may divide themselves into various denominations or churches, but there is no indication in the Bible that God recognizes these divisions. Indeed, God makes it abundantly clear that in His sight there is but one Church, composed of all who truly trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior. In I Cor. 12:12,13 the Apostle Paul declares by divine inspiration:
“For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ:
“FOR BY ONE SPIRIT ARE WE ALL BAPTIZED INTO ONE BODY….”
Again, in Rom. 12:5, he says:
“SO WE, BEING MANY, ARE ONE BODY IN CHRIST, AND EVERY ONE MEMBERS ONE OF ANOTHER.”
Indeed, it is on the basis of the fact that there is but “one body” in God’s sight that He exhorts us to seek to “keep the unity of the Spirit”:
“ENDEAVORING TO KEEP THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT IN THE BOND OF PEACE.
“THERE IS ONE BODY….” (Eph. 4:3,4).
How can we become members of that “one Body ,” the true Church? Ephesians 2 explains how Christ died for all, Jew and Gentile alike, “that He might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross…” (Ver. 16). Indeed the Epistles of St. Paul show how God “hath concluded… all in unbelief that He might have mercy upon all” (Rom. 11:32), and offer to them reconciliation and salvation by grace through faith in Christ who died for our sins.
The question, then, is not: What church do you belong to? but, Do you belong to the Church, the Body of Christ, composed of all who have acknowledged themselves to be sinners in the sight of God and have trusted in Christ and His finished work for salvation?

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." --II Tim. 3:16
There appears to be a natural hesitation on the part of some Bible teachers and commentators to deal objectively with the Scriptural record of the failings of great men of God. Indeed, many Bible expositors lean over backward to excuse, or explain away, at least in part, the sins of great saints. Yet the Bible records these sins with factual exactness, adding no light tones to the black hues of moral and spiritual guilt. This is for our good, for these sad incidents too were recorded "for our admonition" (I Cor. 10:11). John Kitto, in his Daily Bible Illustrations, brings this out in his comments on II Samuel 11 and 12:
"It was while the army was engaged in these distant operations that David fell into those deep sins, which have left a dark blot upon his name, that all his tears have not been able to expunge from the view of man, nor all his griefs to make man forget. It is indeed profitable that they should be held in remembrance, in their causes and results, that the sad fall of so distinguished a saint--a man so near to God--may teach us not to be high-minded, but fear.
"The facts are so well known to every reader that it will suffice to indicate them very briefly.
"David, when walking upon the roof of his palace, after having risen from his afternoon rest, obtained a view of a beautiful woman, of whom he became most passionately enamoured. Her name was Bath-sheba, and she was the wife of Uriah the Hittite, who, notwithstanding his Canaanitish origin, was one of the king's most distinguished officers, and a member of the illustrious band of 'worthies.'
"After gratifying his criminal passion, and finding that it would not be possible much longer to conceal a fact which would expose Bath-sheba to the death-punishment of an adulteress, David did not shrink from sending orders to Joab so to expose her valiant husband in battle as to ensure his destruction by the sword of the Ammonites. Joab obeyed this order to the letter, and Uriah perished. Bathsheba was then free, and David barely suffered the days of her mourning to pass (probably a month) before he added her to the number of his wives.
"Here is adultery; here is murder. O, David, David, how art thou fallen! To our minds, there is nothing in all that man has written so terribly emphatic as the quiet sentence which the historian inserts at the end of his account of these sad transactions.
"His high displeasure was made known to David by the prophet Nathan, in a parable of touching beauty, applied to the case with a degree of force, which at once brought conviction home to the heart of a man not hardened in guilt by a course of less heinous and unrepented sin, but who had plunged headlong into one great and complicated crime. The awful words--'THOU ART THE MAN,' at once brought David to his knees. He confessed his guilt. He deplored it with many tears. He was pardoned; and God hid not his face from him for ever. But seeing that this deed, in a man so honoured, had 'given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme,' it became necessary that God should vindicate His own righteousness, by testifying, in the punishment of His servant, His abhorrence of that servant's sin.
"The sentence pronounced upon him--'Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house,' furnishes the key to David's future history and career, which was as unprosperous and troubled, as the earlier part of his reign had been happy and successful. There was in all things a great change--even in the man himself. Broken in spirit by the consciousness of how deeply he had sinned against God and against man; humbled in the eyes of his subjects, and his influence with them weakened by the knowledge of his crimes; and even his authority in his own household, and his claim to the reverence of his sons, relaxed by his loss of character--David appears henceforth a much altered man. He is as one who goes down to the grave mourning. His active history is past--henceforth he is passive merely. All that was high, and firm, and noble in his character, goes out of view--and all that is weak, and low, and wayward, comes out in strong relief.
"Of the infirmities of his temper and character, there may have been previous indications, but they were but dimly discernible through the splendour of his worthier qualities; now that splendour has waxed pale--the most fine gold has grown dim, and the spots have become broad and distinct. The balance of his character is broken. Still he is pious--but even his piety takes an altered aspect. It is no longer buoyant, exulting, triumphant, glad; it is repressed, humble, patient, contrite, suffering.
"His trust in the Lord is not less than it had been, and that trust sustains him, and still gives dignity to his character and sentiments. But even that trust is different. He is still a son--but he is no longer a Joseph, rejoicing in his father's love, and delighting in the coat of many colours which that love has cast upon him; but rather a Reuben, pardoned, pitied, and forgiven, yet not unpunished, by the father whose honor he has defiled. Alas for him! The bird which once rose to heights unattained before by mortal wing, filling the air with its joyful songs, now lies with maimed wing upon the ground, pouring forth its doleful cries to God.
"The change we have indicated furnishes the key to David's subsequent career, and unless it be borne in mind, the incidents of that career will not be thoroughly understood."
In the above passage Mr. Kitto shows his usual keen insight into the Word of God. In examining the Scriptural record of David's life, it is disappointing indeed to see his "sword arm" weakened so that he can no longer mete out pure justice or discomfit the enemies of righteousness as before.
We live in a day when this sad account serves as a much-needed warning that a moral fall, even when moral falls are so prevalent, enfeebles, debilitates and embarrasses its victim for the remainder of his life.
