The Bible Didides Itself- - Pastor Robert Anderson

There is a very straightforward and uncomplicated verse, which is very special to all of us who are adherents of dispensational theology. It is 2 Tim. 2:15:

"Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

The result in the heart of the student is positive. It is the absence of shame. That is, he will have to make no apologies for what he says about god and His Word. The methodology is a little more complex. The word "rightly divided" (and is by some) to mean cutting it straight or using it correctly. Others see it as somewhat analytical as in the King James translation, dividing the Bible into logical partitions for proper application. As dispensationalists we see it in the latter format. However, seeing that way is also seeing it in the former because proper application means it has be used correctly.

The most frequent names associated with dispensational thought have been J. N. Darby, C. I. Scofield and E. W. Bullinger. Darby was modern dispensationalism’s father. Scofield made it very well known and accepted through the notes in his reference Bible. Bullinger demonstrated that even something good can be taken to extremes resulting in damage done to it.

As a new, young Christian, I learned the seven dispensation system taught by Scofield. Growing up in a Grace Church , it meant that I learned the system modified by a recognition of the distinctive ministry and message of Paul. The church, the body of Christ, did not begin in the traditional Acts 2 time frame. It began sometime between the conversion of Paul and the writing of his first epistoe. At that point of time I had never heard of Bullinger! Friends of mine during college days began to attack my posiiton as being the extreme position of Bullinger. It is not! Bullinger divided the ministry of Paul into two sections. Only the latter section really related to the body of Christ. His system yielded a second or intermediate body. One person gave it the very interesting name of the "Mystical Body of the Kingdom."

I learned and then unlearned the traditional definition of a dispensation. Grace does not end in a judgment upon the church therefore to say they end in judgment creates a fallacy. No two of them have been or will be the same length of ime, therefore they cannot be called a period of time. Since they relate to man and man is a creature of time, they all cover time. Into my thinking came the word "administration" which is a far better, more understandable word in today’s world. We understand administrative changes. Our own president’s have served varying length terms and we call them the: "..... administration." Certainly the changes in Russia help us to realize that administrations do change. Finally, my definition narrowed a little in that it became limited to those changes which truly affected the God/man relationship.

In presenting the traditional position, I used the common approach. Law and grace were surely different in nature. The dietary restrictions upon man were changed quite frequently and the cessation of tongues showed that things had changed since Pentecost. Whether I agree with the Charismatic movement’s definition of tongue or not, any mention of that issue in today’s world generates heat and combustion seldom resulting in light. The dietary changesreally did not have anything to do with the God/man relationship. It had to do with the times. The addition of capital punishment was also a human to human thing. In other words they were horizontal rather than vertical changes.

J. C. O’Hair in his final appearance in the chapel of Milwaukee Bible College gave a message which started me thinking in a new vein. The Bible does truly divide itself. There is a series of texts which will show great changes and even mark their beginning and ending points.
Between them there are a few nebulous periods because the marking events leave room for some variation. It is this series of Scriptures which we are going to consider in this lesson.

If you have ever struggled with the same issues, it is hoped that you will find a method of presentation here that is both sound and Biblical, one that you will be able to used without fear of being labeled a follower of man. Take the texts and go home like the Berean to see whether or not what is said here is valid.

Thank God - Lessons from the Book of Job By Lori Gardner

The book of Job is a fascinating study for many reasons. We get a glimpse of some of the interaction between God and Satan. It is comforting to read that Satan is limited and that God can make a "hedge" of protection around his people. We see the wonders of creation and rejoice in the power behind it as we ask the age old question, "Why do the righteous suffer?" Along with these lessons, we also find several things for which we can give thanks to God.

Thank God
For a True Friend

Job lost ten children, his livestock, and most of his servants in one day's time. Then he was stricken with "sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown." As soon as they heard the news, three of Job's friends came to visit him. At first, they sat silently with him because they saw his "grief was very great." Then they felt they had to speak in order to help Job make sense of his misery. Their speeches cover many chapters and they are full of accusations, and self-righteousness. Each friend, in his own long-winded way, said the same thing, "Job, if you were really innocent, you would not be suffering" (Job 4:7; 8:6; 11:6). Job found no comfort or peace in their words.

There are times when the most sincere words from our friends are not enough to comfort us. Thank God we have someone that loves us unconditionally, and knows our every need. John 15:13 describes the characteristic of a true friend, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." The Lord Jesus Christ is that friend, the One who gave Himself as a sacrifice for our sins. He assures us in His Word, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Heb.13:5; Deut. 31:6). Nothing can separate us from His love (Rom. 8:38-39). We are told to cast all our care upon Him, knowing that He cares for us (1 Pet. 5:7). When we feel desperate, His answer is, "My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness" (2 Cor. 12:10).
Thank God
For His Mercy

Job's friends insisted that he must have done something terrible to deserve such suffering. There are times when we suffer consequences for the choices we make, but Job's calamity was not brought on by any particular sin on his part. The Bible describes Job as "perfect and upright, one that feared God and shunned evil" (Job 1:1). He was considered to be these things because of his faith, which is why God held him up as an example to Satan (Job 1:8; 2:3). The Lord knew that no matter what happened in Job's life, he would "hold fast his integrity."

Mercy means not getting what we really deserve. Job was only seen as perfect and upright because of God's mercy. The Scriptures tell us that we are all born in sin and deserve death as a result (Rom. 5:13; 3:23; 6:23). The only way we can escape a life of misery and eternal separation from God is by receiving by faith His gift of salvation. We can rejoice in the fact that according to His mercy He has saved us (Titus 2:5). It is through Him that we are made righteous (2 Cor. 5:21). Thank God we don't get what we deserve.

Thank God
There's More to Life

In Job 19:13-24, he laments over his circumstances. Physically, Job had become skin and bone. All of his family and friends had forgotten him, and even his wife found him repulsive. In spite of all of this, he still had the hope that one day things would be better. He says, "For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God" (Job 19:25-26). Job knew that one day he would be in the very presence of the Lord and all of his suffering and heartache would be over.

The Apostle Paul wrote, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable" (1 Cor. 15:19). Believers have assurance from God's Word that the sufferings of our present life are not worthy to be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us (Rom. 8:18). We simply cannot imagine the things which God has prepared for those that love Him (1 Cor. 1:9; Is. 64:4). Thank God believers in the Lord Jesus Christ can look forward to a blessed, heavenly future.

Having endured these hardships, the latter part of Job's life was blessed more than the beginning. He lived one hundred and forty more years, saw four generations of sons grow up, and died being old and full of days.

Man cannot begin to understand why God works the way He does. Job summed it up well when he said, "I know that thou canst do everything, and that no thought can be withheld from thee" (Job 42:2). God is all powerful and all knowing. He has a reason for everything He does. We may not understand it, but we can be thankful that everything He does is because of His love for us.

BETWEEN TWO MEN - By J. C. O'Hair

In each of the three Scriptures above listed we have the story of two men, first, Cain and Abel: second, the Pharisee and the Publican who went up to the temple to pray; third, the penitent thief and the impenitent thief who died on either side of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Cain was a religious man, very much like those foolish kinsmen of the apostle Paul to whom he referred in Romans 10:1 to 4, who being ignorant of God’s righteousness and going about to establish their own righteousness, they would not submit themselves unto the righteousness of God which is by faith. They failed, therefore, to become righteous. (Romans 9:30 to 33).

Cain insisted that God should accept his good works and religious deeds. Cain did not want redemption by blood.

We are told in Jude 11 of professing Christians who are going in the way of Cain. Think of the great multitude of “Christianized agnostics,” called modernists, in so-called evangelical church organizations, who are going religiously to perdition. They hate the gospel of “blood” redemption.

In Hebrews 11:4 we have God’s truth concerning Abel: “By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it HE BEING DEAD YET SPEAKETH.”

Here we have righteousness by faith and by the sacrifice of a substitute. ABEL BEING DEAD YET SPEAKETH. He speaks today, in the middle of the twentieth Christian century, although he was murdered by his religious brother nearly six thousand years ago. Be sure you go in Abel’s way and not Cain’s.

God wants Abel to speak to us, so read the interesting story of these two men in Genesis 4:1 to 13.

Cain offered the fruit of the cursed ground, the labor of his hands. This would not deliver him from the law of sin and death. Even after God told Cain of his blunder and what to do, Cain refused. With envy and malice Cain killed Abel: “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous,” I John 3:12.

God’s Word is clear and positive, “without the shedding of blood, there is no remission”. (Hebrews 9:22), “It is the blood that maketh a covering for the soul”. (Leviticus 17:11). “The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, cleanseth us from all sin.” (I John 1:7 to 9). Read also Hebrews 9:26 - Hebrews 9:12 - Hebrews 9:14 and especially Hebrews 12:24.

The Pharisee, in Luke 18:9 to 14, was a very zealous, sincere religious man. He too had zeal without knowledge. Like millions of well-meaning, religious people today, he was sincerely wrong. He trusteth in his own heart. In Proverbs 28:26 we read that such a one is a fool. He went away condemned. The publican prayed, “meet me a sinner at the blood sprinkled mercy-seat.” He was justified. Now God has been merciful - Christ is the propitiation (the blood sprinkled mercy-seat), for the sins of the whole world. (I John 2:2).

What was between Cain and Abel, between the Pharisee and the publican? The same thing that will be between all the people in eternal perdition and eternal glory, the blood of the Lamb. This applies to most respectable, moral, religious, cultured gentlemen or ladies.

We have had the story of two men in the field, and two men in the temple.

Now two men on the cross. Two thieves. Neither was religious. They deserved capital punishment - what was between them? The blood of the Lamb. One by faith, received the Lamb and will be in glory with the redeemed. The other rejected the Lamb and was not delivered from the wrath to come (I Thessalonians 1:10 - John 3:36).

Certainly all of these men, being dead, yet speaketh.

THE HOPE OF GLORY - By C. R. Stam

THE HOPE OF GLORY
C. R. Stam

We are taught in Romans 5 that the believer in Christ receives justification, peace with God, access to God and the “hope,” or anticipation, of sharing His glory some day. God wants His children to enjoy this coming glory by faith, to live in eager anticipation of it.

How much there is to humiliate us in this life! God created man in His own image and likeness, but man sinned and fell from his exalted position. To Adam God said:

“Cursed is the ground because of thee; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.”

Since that dreadful day man’s life has been a constant struggle. Everything tends to go wrong rather than right. Each has his share of trouble, sorrow, sickness and then — death, the greatest humiliation of all, when in sickness and pain, or at best in utter weakness, he must give up this life itself.

Sin and the fall! This is what modern science and philosophy fail to face up to. Most popular scientists and philosophers today hold that man has come up from the slime pit and the ape to modern man; that man is improving all the time. But the truth of God’s Word is that man has fallen through sin and is growing worse morally and spiritually until now he can kill more of his fellowmen faster than he ever could before.

But it is this fact, this fact of sin and the fall that God has so graciously provided for. He took all the suffering and shame, paid all the penalty for our sins, and then rose from the dead so that we might rejoice in the hope, the eager anticipation, of glory to come!

As St. Peter puts it in I Pet. 1:3:

“[He] hath begotten us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

How Does Your Garden Grow - By Charles Wages

"Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." (Gal. 6:7-8)

Just as there are natural laws that God has set in motion, so are there spiritual laws that are even more important and pronounced. Although these are "perilous" times, yet they are times of great opportunity. This is such a wonderful season in which to sow the Word.

There is an improper or bad way to sow. For instance:

If we sow iniquity, we reap vanity (Eccl. 2:11).
If we sow indifference, we reap poverty (Prov. 24:30-34).
If we sow sparingly, we reap sparingly (2 Cor. 9:6).
It must never be forgotten or neglected that there is a proper sowing in the garden of life that will prosper and produce for God's glory. Psalms 126:5-6 reads,

"They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing bringing his sheaves with him."

Seed must be sown in order to produce, but it must be the "precious" seed. Not only is this seed rare and precious, but it's destiny is to be acquired for scattering. Also, in God's divine providence, results will be sure and satisfying. George Williams in his Student's Commentary on the Holy Scriptures says of Psalms 126:6, "But as the one bearing the seed basket certainly goes forth weeping because of suffering and hardship, so the one bearing his sheaves will surely come again rejoicing. Philip by divine command left joyful Samaria and went down into the Southern desert possibly lonely, depressed and tearful, but he returned rejoicing" (Acts 8).

This "precious seed" is the Word of God. Properly sown it Saves, Sanctifies, Sustains, and Satisfies!

One of the most enlightening statements on this subject is found in 1 Corinthians 3:6-8,

"I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither is he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one; and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour."

Paul desired to protect the proper sowing of the Word and very well knew that "God gave the increase." Criticism from unregenerate or carnal Christians should not deter or detour the faithful servant of Christ. There are many enemies of the proper sowing of the Word, just as there are bugs, pests, diseases, and predatory animals that attack the garden.

The Lord Jesus, while here on earth, used the analogy of sowing and reaping. In John 4:35-37, He said,

"Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already unto harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth."

It is difficult when we plant anything to realize that the result is future. We are all so impatient! It takes a man of great faith to plant a tree in his old age. Why would he plant a tree knowing that he would never see it mature and bear fruit? The only answer would be that he trusted God for the future and was unselfish enough to desire others, after he was gone, to enjoy the fruits.

It is interesting to note that John 4:3 taken with 1 Corinthians 3:8 brings together something that seems contradictory yet is really complementary. Jesus spoke of the sower and the reaper rejoicing together, while Paul said "every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor." It must be recognized that there are great dispensational truths involved here. Not only are different peoples involved, but different times are meant as to the reaping and rewarding. However, the principle of "rejoicing together" is beautiful. Do we plant gardens just to benefit ourselves? Does the one who plants say, "this garden and its fruit is mine exclusively?" Does he who gathers the vegetables say to those who have sown, watered, and protected, "you cannot have any of the produce?"

When the Word is properly sown, we can leave the results to God and have an attitude of sharing the blessings with all of God's saints.

Let us rejoice together and let us, "Rejoice Evermore" (1 Thess. 5:16).

FROM ADAM TO MOSES - By J. C. O'Hair

In Romans 5:12 to 14 we learn that Adam was a figure of Jesus Christ; and that death reigned from Adam to Moses; and that universal sin and death have resulted from Adam’s sin.

We also learn that “from Adam to Moses” there was no law. This is explained in Romans 5:20: “Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound.” The law that was “from Adam to Moses” was “the law of sin and death.” (John 1:17). Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the ten commandments about 2500 years after Adam was driven from Eden under another law, “the law of sin and death.” The law (the ten commandments) was added, because of transgressions. (Galatians 3:19).

While it is true that, by Moses is the knowledge of sin (Romans 3:20) because sin is the transgression of the law (I John 3:4) and as Paul said, “I had not known lust except the law said, thou shalt not covet” (Romans 7:7), yet sin and death reigned from Adam to Moses, when there was no such law as was added at Sinai because of transgressions, (Galatians 3:19).

For 2500 years the descendants of Adam had neither the written revelation of God nor the law and religion given Israel at Sinai, but they had a law written in their hearts (conscience) (Romans 2:15) and they had the revelation of God in creation. (Romans 1:20).

So under “the law of sin and death” the human race was without excuse. (Romans 1:20).

If before God gave His program to Israel and without the Bible, the children of Adam were condemned (Romans 5:18) and without excuse, how about the condemned lost sinner of the twentieth century, nearly 2000 years since Christ came to earth and went back by the way of Calvary and sent the Holy Spirit and His apostles to give us the glorious gospel of grace and a complete written revelation and nineteen centuries of Christianity? We are surely without excuse and unbelievers are headed for an awful judgment as the result of the universal law of sin and death.

Note the spiritual state of Adam’s children: “ . . . who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience. Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.” Ephesians 2:1 to 3. Alienated from the life of God. (Ephesians 4:18).

The only hope of Adam’s children is Romans 8:2: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:2.

Let us keep in mind that the Holy Spirit has very definitely marked in the Bible a period in the history of man, called, “From Adam to Moses”. (Romans 5:14).

That which God gave to Moses on Mount Sinai was later called the covenant made old, or “the Old Testament,” (Hebrews 8:7 to 13 - II Corinthians 3:7 to 17). “From Adam to Moses” covered a period of about 2500 years. During that period Adam lived and died, Abel, Seth, Noah, Shem, Eber, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (Israel) and Israel’s twelve sons all lived and died. They all died before God added the “law” covenant at Sinai, later known as “the Old Testament”, so none of them were Old Testament characters.

Moses was 80 years old when the “law” covenant was added.

Let us carefully compare Jeremiah 31:31 to 35 with Exodus 20 and learn just when Jehovah and Israel entered into the “law” covenant. That was 330 years after Abraham died, or 430 years after God made His “Promise” covenant with Abram. (Galatians 3:17 - Galatians 3:8 - Romans 4:7 to 12). In Colossians 2:13 to 16 we learn what made the “law” covenant, “the old covenant.” There is not one line in the Book of Genesis concerning the “law” covenant (of Exodus 20) made “old” at Calvary. Therefore think of the great blunder Christians have been making for centuries calling the Book of Genesis part of the Old Testament. There was no Old Testament from Adam to Moses.

THE NATURAL AND THE SUPERNATURAL bY mEL fOGEL

Why does the songbird sing his song? Why does the dog give us his bark? The same reason the cat says, "meow". It is their nature to do so, the nature they received from their parents. We humans also have the characteristics of our parents by nature. Among them is a sinful nature. We are born sinners by nature passed down to us from Adam after he sinned against God in the garden of Eden. This presents many problems, the largest being that there is a penalty for sin. We, by nature, want to hide from God and to remain in darkness and to deceive ourselves. But God's light and grace are supernatural, transcending our natural blindness and darkened minds and hearts.

Jesus Christ has paid in full the penalty for sin. This He did once for all by dying our death, shedding His blood as payment to God. He rose again from the dead and now Supernaturally gives a NEW NATURE to everyone who believes.

NATURAL MAN: HIS TENDENCY AND CAPABILITIES

Romans 5:12 says, "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned." Paul explains this further and adds that not only are we born with a sinful nature, but we are also born spiritually dead. He wrote to the Ephesians, "And you hath he quickened who were DEAD IN TRESPASSES AND SINS, wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience, among whom WE ALL HAD OUR CONVERSATION in times past in the lust of the flesh and of the mind, AND WERE BY NATURE THE CHILDREN OF WRATH, even as others." (Ephesians 2:1-3)

One characteristic we humans are born with places us on a very different plain from the animals, however. We have a consciousness of the existence and presence of God. Even in our fallen state, we all have the God-given ability to receive enlightenment and illumination by the Holy Spirit. (He is Supernatural) "In him (Jesus Christ) was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness of the Light, THAT ALL MEN THROUGH HIM MIGHT BELIEVE. He was not the Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which lighteth EVERY MAN THAT COMETH INTO THE WORLD." (John 1:4-9)

Man is not innocently blind, or innocently in darkness, or innocently dead spiritually. The light of truth and knowledge which God sends to him he denies, he covers up, he resists, even if he can make the existence of God a gray area. "He that believeth on him is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and MEN LOVED DARKNESS RATHER THAN LIGHT BECAUSE THEIR DEEDS WERE EVIL. For everyone that doeth evil hateth the Light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be manifest, that they are wrought in God." (John 3:18-21)

Man in his fallen state still has a God-given consciousness of his creator, and the Supernatural enlightening and illuminating work of the Holy Spirit brings truth and knowledge home to his mind, heart and conscience. Man is without excuse. "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, WHO HOLD THE TRUTH IN UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, because THAT WHICH MAY BE KNOWN OF GOD IS MANIFEST IN THEM, for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being UNDERSTOOD by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are WITHOUT EXCUSE. Because that, when they KNEW God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful, but BECAME vain in their imaginations and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise THEY BECAME FOOLS." (Romans 1:18-22) Again, man is not innocently blind, he likes to deny truth and deceive himself.

THE SUPERNATURAL WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

God is not only Supernatural, He is a Super Savior manifesting the gospel of the grace of Jesus Christ to unbelievers everywhere. "Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and MAKETH MANIFEST THE SAVOUR OF HIS KNOWLEDGE BY US IN EVERY PLACE. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, AND IN THEM THAT PERISH, to the one we are THE SAVOUR OF DEATH UNTO DEATH, and to the other the savour of life unto life." "You are our epistle written in our hearts, KNOWN AND READ OF ALL MEN "Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not, but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully. BUT BY MANIFESTATION OF THE TRUTH COMMENDING OURSELVES TO EVERY MAN'S CONSCIENCE in the sight of God." (ll Corinthians 2:14-16; 3: 2; 4:1-2)

So from this we see that man in his fallen state is still capable to receive enlightenment, and enough illumination to know what he is required by God to believe in order to be saved. He has a responsibility to do so. This is how God is justified to punish "them that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ." (II Thessalonians 1:8)

Jesus said, "It is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you, but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment; of sin, because I go to my Father, and you see me no more, of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. " (John 16:7-11) The supernatural convicting work of the Holy Spirit, enlightens the mind as God's messengers deliver warning about the penalty for sin which is "everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord" (II Thessalonians 1: 9) God does not by-pass our minds in requiring that we trust Jesus Christ and His finished work as the only way of salvation. This is where the rubber meets the road so-to-speak, for at this point man must exercise faith in God's revelation, God's declaration, and this is something he cannot see, smell, touch, taste or hear with his senses. He must believe with his heart or soul.

THE PREACHING OF THE CROSS IS A SUPER POWERFUL MESSAGE

God's Word tells us that the penalty for sin is "Everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord" Our senses cannot grasp this, but they can grasp death, darkness, separation, isolation, physical destruction, pain, punishment, solitude and suffering. The Holy Spirit brings home the fact that if these phenomena are true, then God's warning about the penalty for sin can also be true and His remedy trustworthy. His divine influence upon the heart or soul helps fallen man have the capability to trust God's remedy for sin, it's penalty and it's power. He helps man to fear the penalty and consequence of unbelief.

Even though trusting Jesus Christ and His vicarious death (or death in our place) seems foolish or too easy, God's Word has otherwise proven trustworthy -- so why not trust Him on this one too. So then he believes with his heart or soul and God rewards his faith giving him a NEW NATURE along with forgiveness of sins, eternal life, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. "For by grace (or divine influence upon the heart) are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." (Ephesians 2: 8-10) Upon believing we are made a new creation, given a new nature "which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness." (Ephesians 4:24)

God has revealed so much light and truth by sending His Son Jesus Christ into the world, sending Him to endure the death of the cross, making complete satisfaction to God for sins. And now He offers eternal redemption as a free gift to all who will believe. He has sent the Holy Spirit to supernaturally help natural man see his dilemma, and show him God's remedy. It is no wonder He commands all men everywhere to repent by believing, man has no excuse for not believing and receiving His offer. His grace is presently being dispensed to all. This is why he warns and beseeches "you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain" (II Corinthians 6:1) It is one thing to be enlightened and illuminated concerning the need and the remedy. But it is another thing to apply it to your soul and believe it.

Maybe the good news of God's grace is tugging at the veil over your heart and pulling away the blinders from your mind right now? "Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass (mirror) the glory of the Lord, ARE CHANGED into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord." (II Corinthians 3:16-18)

Why not turn to Him right now with your heart and mind and be changed into His image? "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." (II Corinthians 4: 6)

Our Strong Hold - By Charles Wages

[ center"The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him." (Nahum 1:7)

Nahum wrote and prophesied the destruction of the great city of Nineveh. This city had repented at the preaching of Jonah about 100 years earlier, but had soon forgotten.

It seemed almost impossible for Nineveh to be destroyed. Its walls were massive and rose to a height of 100 feet with hundreds of towers atop them. It is said that three chariots could drive abreast on them and that they enclosed approximately 1800 acres. The Tigris river protected it on one side and moats on the other sides. It seemed impregnable and invincible!

A century later, this great city was destroyed. It passed so far into oblivion, that for centuries no one knew the location of its existence! It was destroyed by water (Nah. 2:6) and fire (Nah. 3:13-15).

In the context of all this destruction, comes the wonderful truth: "the Lord is a stronghold in the day of trouble." How wonderful and reassuring to know that we have a place of refuge, a place of real safety! Though wars may rage as we approach the end of the age, we can seek the safety of the Saviour! The destructive forces of water and fire, or the devastating devices of the Devil cannot reach us!

Also, how comforting to know: "the Lord knoweth them that trust in Him." Literally, "the Lord owns them that trust in Him." We are reminded of 2 Timothy 2:20, "Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are His." We belong to Him; He purchased us with His precious blood. Don't we know and believe that He will protect and provide for us in all kinds of times?

Our Reasonable Servive - By Gregg Bing

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service." (Romans 12:1)

With these familiar words, the apostle Paul begins the portion of the letter to the Romans that deals with the daily life and service of a believer. Paul beseeches each of us as brethren, as fellow believers in Christ, to present our bodies as a sacrifice to God.

The word beseech literally means to "call to the side of" for the purpose of supporting, comforting, encouraging, or urging. Paul is urging and encouraging us, as believers, to "present" ourselves to God.

To "present" means "to place near or beside; to put at the disposal of; to make available for use." The word is used in Matthew 26:53 when Peter tried to prevent Jesus' arrest in the garden of Gethsemane, and Jesus asked him, "Do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?" This same word is used in Luke 2:22 when Jesus' parents brought Him to Jerusalem, as a baby, "to present Him to the Lord." In accordance with the law of the Jesus' parents consecrated Him and presented Him to the Lord. We are urged to do the same thing with our bodies: to "present" or "yield" them to the Lord as "members of righteousness to God" (Rom. 6:13 that they might be vessels "for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work" (2 Tim. 2:21).

Believers are to present their bodies a sacrifice to God. The word "sacrifice" is the same word that is used for the Old Testament sacrifices (Heb. 10:1), as well as for Christ's sacrifice to God for us (Eph. 5:2). Paul uses three adjectives to describe our sacrifice to God.

A Living Sacrifice
First, it is to be a living sacrifice. Old Testament sacrifices were slain and offered to the Lord, but ours is to be a living sacrifice. 2 Corinthians 5:15 states that "... those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again."

A Holy Sacrifice
Second, our sacrifice is to be a holy sacrifice. The word holy means "separated or set apart." The Old Testament offerings consisted of a lamb or a ram which was without spot or blemish (Lev. 1:3). The Lord Jesus Himself was offered to God "as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Pet. 1:19). A holy God requires a holy offering. As believers, we are sanctified or made holy by the blood of Christ. When we trust in Christ as our Savior, we are placed "in Christ." God sees us as He sees Christ: "holy and without blame before Him" (Eph. 1:4). This is what we are positionally in Christ, but as a living sacrifice, believers should also seek to live holy, separated lives for the Lord; lives which are set apart from the world (1 John 2:15-17) with its sinful thoughts, desires, words, and actions; lives which are clean and pure; lives which are consecrated to a holy God.

An Acceptable Sacrifice
Third, our sacrifice is to be an acceptable sacrifice. The word acceptable means "well pleasing;" that which brings delight or pleasure. The majority of people, including many believers, live to please themselves or to please other people, but Romans 12:1 declares that our sacrifice is to be well pleasing to God. Many of the Old Testament sacrifices were offerings made by fire. When these offerings were given and sacrificed in accordance with God's Word, the smell of the offering, as it was burnt, was "a sweet aroma to the Lord" (Lev. 1:13). This means it was well pleasing to Him. The Lord Jesus was called by God, "My Beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased" (Matt. 3:17). When Jesus Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice to God in our behalf, it was a "sweet-smelling aroma" to God (Eph. 5:2). As a living sacrifice, we are to seek to please the Lord in all that we do, say, and think. The apostle Paul stated this was to be our aim in life, "to be well pleasing to Him" (2 Cor. 5:9).

Here is God's desire for His children-that we present our bodies as a sacrifice to Him, a sacrifice that is living, holy, and well pleasing to the Lord. Paul declares that this is our "reasonable service." The word service, as used in the New Testament, refers to service rendered unto God. When Jesus was tempted to bow down and worship Satan, He answered, "It is written, You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only you shall serve" (Matt.4:10). The word service is used particularly of service rendered to God in the tabernacle (Heb 9:1It is closely associated with the idea of worship.

The word reasonable is the Greek word logikos, which is akin to the Greek word logos. It means "reasonable, logical, rational; that which is of the mind, thus it is sensible or intelligent." When we consider God's wonderful love for us and the indescribable gift He has given us in His Son (John 3:16, 1 John 4:10), what should our reasonable response be? When we consider that we have been bought with the precious blood of Christ and therefore we belong to God (Cor. 6:20), what should be our logical service? When we consider God's wonderful purpose for our lives, to bring glory and honor to Him and to be ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor. 5:20), what is the sensible, intelligent thing for us to do? We are to worship the Lord and serve Him only; we are to sacrificially present ourselves to God, placing ourselves completely at His disposal to be used as He sees fit. This is our reasonable service.

RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE SCRIPTURES By J. C. O'Hair

In Galatians 1:3 and 4 we read of “this present evil age.” In Ephesians 2:7, we read of “the ages to come.” In Ephesians 3:5 we read of “the other ages” (past ages). All Christians speak of “the Old Testament Age” and “the New Testament Age.”

In Ephesians 3:5 and in Colossians 1:24 to 26, we learn that the people of God in the ages before Paul, including their inspired prophets, did not have foreknowledge of God’s spiritual program during this present dispensation of grace. (Ephesians 3:1 to 4). In these verses we learn that Paul did not, and could not, know God’s present program by studying Israel’s Scriptures. Paul did not learn it from what Christ on earth taught the twelve apostles. (Galatians 1:11 to 19 - Galatians 2:1 to 7). It was truth never before revealed even to the most faithful and the most spiritual servants of the Lord. Therefore, Paul wrote of the unsearchable (untraceable) riches of Christ, God’s eternal purpose. (Ephesians 3:8 to 11). Paul received it by direct revelation from Christ in heaven. It was new truth for a new age for a new dispensation, a new program, called “God’s eternal purpose.” (Ephesians 3:11). It had to do with the making of “One New Man”, (Ephesians 2:15); made up of Christ and new creatures in Christ. (II Corinthians 5:17).

As this was not contemplated by Israel’s ancient prophets and as it was not the program which the Lord Jesus gave to Peter and the Eleven (Acts 2:16), and as Christians are now members of the Body of Christ, all Body members should study, interpret, appropriate and apply all other Scriptures in the light of the “Body” truth which the risen Christ revealed to the apostle Paul. This is indeed the golden key which the Holy Spirit has for those who will obey II Timothy 2:15 and Ephesians 3:9.

This is the meaning of II Timothy 2:15: “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.” “Rightly dividing” is translated from “orthotomeo” - “ortho” means “right” - “tomeo” means “to cut,” “to dissect.” The Greek word in Hebrews 4:12 refers to the word “SHARPER” than a sword. To cut aright God’s Word, certainly means to compare spiritual with spiritual, and more. (I Corinthians 2:10 to 16).

During the Old Testament age, or dispensation, God’s people had “meats, drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation.” (Hebrews 9:10). These belonged to Israel’s “shadow” days (Hebrews 10:1 to 10 - Colossians 2:13 to 18). The time of reformation had come when Christ revealed His new program of Ephesians 3:1 to 6 to Paul.

Israel had the seventh day sabbath. They could eat no pork. They worshipped God in a portable tabernacle and a Jerusalem Temple. They practiced physical circumcision. They had earthly priests and many religious feast days. None of these ceremonies, which had a God-given place in a former age, has a place in this age, for we are not under the law, we are under grace (Romans 6:14). The Temple now is made up of redeemed sinners baptized into the Body of Christ, with the spiritual circumcision of Philippians 3:1 to 3.

Read Ephesians 2:19 to 22.

As the Lord Jesus Christ, as Jesus of Nazareth on this earth, was under the law, He did not live under this present dispensation of grace which He revealed after He ascended far above all heavens and gave gifts unto men. (Ephesians 4:10 to 13).

Christians should cut aright the Word of truth by studying the earthly ministry of Christ in the light of the truth of Romans, Ephesians, Galatians, Colossians and other “grace” Epistles.
The “Acts” ministry of the twelve apostles, the signs of Mark 16:16 to 18 and the sign gifts of I Corinthians 12:8 to 11 should be studied in the light of the revelation of the mystery mentioned in Romans 16:25, in the light of different gifts in Ephesians 4:9 to 13.

In advancing from the truth of the one Body in I Corinthians 12:13 to the truth of the same one Body in Ephesians and Colossians Paul was going from a child to a man. (I Corinthians 13:8 to 13).

GENTILES BEFORE AND AFTER CHRIST'S DWATH By J. C. O'Hair

The Epistle to the Romans was written about 60 A.D., more than twenty-five years after Christ died on the cross for the sins of the whole world. A most radical change in God’s dealings with the Gentiles took place between the year that the Lord Jesus Christ talked with the Gentile Greek woman (Matthew 15:21 to 27 and Mark 7:24 to 30) and the year that the risen Christ revealed to the apostle Paul the truth of Romans 10:12: “There is no difference between the Jew and the Greek for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.”

At the time Christ talked with that Gentile woman, the Gentiles were “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel,” “having no hope and without God in the world.” (Ephesians 2:12). Israel was “nigh” and the Gentiles were “afar off”. (Ephesians 2:17 and 2:13). The Gentiles were “a foolish nation”, “no people”. (Romans 10:19).

Note the language Christ used in His conversation with that Gentile Greek woman; “It is not meet to take the children’s bread and cast it unto dogs.” (Mark 7:27). In speaking concerning the faith of another Gentile, the Lord Jesus called Israel, “the children of the kingdom”. (Matthew 8:12).

There is a great difference between “children” and “dogs”. In Exodus 11:7 we have God’s own words to Israel, “The Lord doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.” Note also Exodus 19:5, “Ye (Israel) shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people.” And again, Isaiah 45:4: “Israel, Mine elect - I have surnamed thee.” Again, Isaiah 43:21, “This people have I formed for Myself, they shall show forth My praise.” Again, Isaiah 44:21: “I have found thee, Thou art My servant, O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of Me.” Again Isaiah 45:17: “But Israel shall be saved in the Lord with an everlasting salvation.”

In Acts 13:23 and Acts 5:29 to 32, we read that Christ was born to be Israel’s Saviour. While Christ was on earth neither Christ nor His apostles were sent to Gentiles; but only to Israel. (Matthew 15:24 - Matthew 10:5 to 8). (Read also Matthew 10:23 and Acts 10:39 and Acts 2:22).

In Luke 1:67 to 77 we are told very definitely that Christ was born to deliver Israel from Gentile political control. But Israel knew not the time of their visitation (Luke 19:44), and said “We will not have this man to reign over us.” (Luke 19:14). Christ came unto His own and His own received Him not. (John 1:11). Israel had a real fall. (Romans 11:11 - Romans 11:5 to 9). Israel will rise again. (Isaiah 62:1 to 4; Romans 11:26). Then Gentiles from all over the world will come to the Lord.

But after Christ died on the cross, His gospel was “to the Jew first and also to the Gentile.” (Romans 1:16). Here is a very interesting question in Romans 3:29. “Is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also of the Gentiles?” This question was asked years after Christ died and broke down the partition between Israel “nigh” and the Gentiles “afar off.” (Ephesians 2:13 to 17).The answer was “Yes, of the Gentiles also."

Therefore, Gentiles should go to Romans for the gospel of grace rather than to Matthew, Mark and Luke.

The two Gentiles, who were blessed while Christ was on earth, received blessings because both of them had great faith. (Matthew 8:10 - Matthew 15:28). All Gentiles were offered salvation later on, because of Israel’s unbelief and because of great grace, love and mercy. (Romans 11:30 and Ephesians 2:4 to 9). Hold on to the great truth of Romans 11:30. Cornelius, saved under Peter’s keys of the kingdom, feared God and worked righteousness. (Acts 10:34 and 35 - Acts 10:1 to 14).

Gentiles, in this age and dispensation of grace, do not have to take the place of little dogs under the table; for by grace they are seated in the heavenlies in Christ. (Compare Mark 7:28 and Ephesians 2:6 to 9). Ye which were afar off are brought nigh by the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:13).

TRUE SANCTIFICTION - By Miles Stanford

"Of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us ... sanctification" (1 Cor. 1:30).

If we keep in mind that the Lord Jesus is our Sanctification, the seemingly difficult subject will clearly unfold for us day by day.

"Many fall into the Methodistic, or Quaker, or Pearsall-Smith scheme of sanctification --- all of which is substantially the same. The true scriptural means of sanctification is that you are set apart to God. It is not at all a question of whether there is evil in your flesh, for there is a great deal. Why, that is all the old man is made of!

"But yet you are sanctified. Sanctification has nothing whatever to do with the extinction of evil in the flesh. That idea, begun with Pelagius, revived by Thomas a'Kempis, handed down through Jeremy Taylor, the French and Dutch mystics, Wm. Law and John Wesley, has passed into other communions where they have no notion whatever whence it came." ---W.K.

"The Christian life is nothing short of the life of the Lord Jesus (Col. 3:4). It is His life reproduced in us. 'That the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh' (2 Cor. 4:11). The common conception of sanctification is that every area of the life should be holy; but that is not holiness, it is the fruit of holiness: holiness is the Lord Jesus Christ.

"When we are conscious of pride we fancy that humility will meet our need, but the answer to pride is not humility, it is the Lord Jesus, and He is the answer to every need. The Father will not give you humility or patience or love as separate gifts of grace; He has given you the Lord Jesus, and if you simply trust Him to live out His life in you, He will be humble, patient, loving and everything else you need."

"God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth" (2 Thess. 2:13)

The Omnipresence of God - By Lori Gardner

One of the most fascinating and mysterious attributes or characteristics of God is that He is omnipresent. This means He is with us at all times. Like all of His attributes, the fact that He is omnipresent can bring great comfort to the believer. We find through the Scriptures that wherever we go, we are not alone. He is always with us, whether we feel His presence or not. Proverbs 15:3 says, "The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good."

God is actually everywhere at the same time. That’s difficult for the human mind to understand because we are limited by time and space, but God is not. According to John 4:24 He is a spirit. Because of this, He can reach the heights and depths of the universe He created.

After Adam and Eve sinned, they tried to hide themselves from the presence of the Lord among the trees of the garden (Gen. 3:8). It didn’t work; God knew exactly where they were and why they were hiding. Jeremiah 23:23-24 asks, "Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord."

When God told Jonah to go and preach to the people of Ninevah, he also tried to "flee from the presence of the Lord" (Jonah 1:3). In rebellion, he boarded a ship going the opposite direction, was cast into the sea, and swallowed up by a great fish. Still, God was with him. In fact, it was the Lord Himself that prepared the fish to swallow Jonah (Jonah 1:17). Even from the depths of the sea, inside the belly of a fish, the Lord anticipated and heard his cry (Jonah 2:2).

God watches over even the smallest of His creatures (Matt. 10:29-31). Even something that seems as common as little sparrows will not fall to the ground apart from the Father. If He cares that much for small birds, how much more does He value His children? (Matt. 6:26).

We can take comfort in the fact that only God is omnipresent. Satan is not. His power is limited to that which God allows. We also can find peace in the fact that our God is never too busy, too preoccupied, or too unfeeling to hear us. There is never a place we can go that is beyond His presence.

"Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost pas of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me." (Psalm 139:7-10)
