One of the most fascinating and mysterious attributes or characteristics of God is that He is omnipresent. This means He is with us at all times. Like all of His attributes, the fact that He is omnipresent can bring great comfort to the believer. We find through the Scriptures that wherever we go, we are not alone. He is always with us, whether we feel His presence or not. Proverbs 15:3 says, "The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good."
God is actually everywhere at the same time. That’s difficult for the human mind to understand because we are limited by time and space, but God is not. According to John 4:24 He is a spirit. Because of this, He can reach the heights and depths of the universe He created.
After Adam and Eve sinned, they tried to hide themselves from the presence of the Lord among the trees of the garden (Gen. 3:8). It didn’t work; God knew exactly where they were and why they were hiding. Jeremiah 23:23-24 asks, "Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord."
When God told Jonah to go and preach to the people of Ninevah, he also tried to "flee from the presence of the Lord" (Jonah 1:3). In rebellion, he boarded a ship going the opposite direction, was cast into the sea, and swallowed up by a great fish. Still, God was with him. In fact, it was the Lord Himself that prepared the fish to swallow Jonah (Jonah 1:17). Even from the depths of the sea, inside the belly of a fish, the Lord anticipated and heard his cry (Jonah 2:2).
God watches over even the smallest of His creatures (Matt. 10:29-31). Even something that seems as common as little sparrows will not fall to the ground apart from the Father. If He cares that much for small birds, how much more does He value His children? (Matt. 6:26).
We can take comfort in the fact that only God is omnipresent. Satan is not. His power is limited to that which God allows. We also can find peace in the fact that our God is never too busy, too preoccupied, or too unfeeling to hear us. There is never a place we can go that is beyond His presence.
"Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost pas of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me." (Psalm 139:7-10)
