The Bible - by Pastor Paul M. Sadler

Earlier this year, my wife and I had an opportunity to visit the “Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible” exhibit at the Milwaukee Museum. When we entered the exhibit, we were given a small hand-held recorder about the size of a cell phone. As we made our way through the exhibit, we simply punched in the number of the display and were given an explanation of the scroll, book, or artifact and its significance.

In addition to the Dead Sea Scrolls there were numerous biblical artifacts that took you back in time to the days of our Lord. For example, there was a display of the coinage of the period that was embossed with an image of Caesar. This would have been the same type of coin the Lord pointed to when He answered the question of the Pharisees and the Herodians about paying tribute to Caesar (Mark 12:13-17). There was also an exhibit of oil lamps, one of which would have been the type used in the Parable of the Ten Virgins. It was interesting to see how the five wise virgins would have trimmed their lamps (Matt. 25:1-10).

The most fascinating part of the exhibit was the Dead Sea Scrolls, which incorporated the development of the English Versions of the Scriptures, as well as the Guttenberg Bible, the first Bible ever produced on a printing press. I personally accept by faith that we have the Word of God today. But for the skeptic or critic who questions the Word of God, the Dead Sea Scrolls clearly show the providential care of God.

For example, the oldest copy of the Torah prior to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls would have been about the 10th Century. The Torah is the first 5 Books of the Hebrew Bible ascribed to Moses. Archeologists date the Dead Sea Scrolls between the 1st Century B.C. and the first half of the 1st Century A.D. They were discovered in caves on the sheer rock face of the northwest shore of the Dead Sea by a Bedouin shepherd in 1947. Despite the vast period of time between these two sets of manuscripts there is an amazing continuity, especially in regard to sense. For example:

The English translation of Deuteronomy 8:19 from the 10th Century (Hebrew Masoretic Text) states:
“I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.”
When the Scholars translated this same passage from the Dead Sea Scrolls manuscripts it came out as follows in English:
“I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.”
Hopefully, you will have an opportunity to visit this exhibition which is touring the country; it is well worth your time.

THE PROMISE OF TRIUMPH - By Ivan L. Burgener

  THE PROMISE OF TRIUMPH
By  Ivan L. Burgener

Scripture Reading: Romans 8:31

"If God be for us, who can be against us?" This is an  answer, a question, and a promise.

The answer to the preceding question is of exclamation,  "What shall we say to these things?" (verse 31). These  things to which Paul is responding are the glorious truths in  the preceding verse: "whom He did predestinate, them He  also called: and whom He called, them He also justified: and  whom He justified, them He also glorified" (verse 30). God,  who "calleth those things that be not as though they were"  (4:17), here considers the believer not only predestinated,  but also glorified! Paul's answer to this question is stated in  question form, "If God be for us (and of course He isl), who  can be against us (and succeed)?"

Now all this turns out to be a wonderful promise of the  constant, keeping, eternal care of God over all of us who  believe in the Lord Jesus Christ; but this is not all. For Paul  continues to rhetorically ask, "How shall He [God] not with  Him [Christ] freely give us all things?" As Paul goes on to  enumerate some of the glories that are included in "all  things," I often think and ponder how anyone today could  go beyond the Scriptures to the Body of Christ, and claim  Israel's place or blessings. With all the blessings lavished  upon us in this dispensation of the grace of God, there just  is no need nor excuse to lower our position in the heavenlies  in Christ and claim something which God has reserved for  others. Without doubt, God is more glorified when we by  faith appropriate what He has bestowed upon us and give'  Him the thanks!

ISRAEL'S PROMISES – By Harold Steinbron

   ISRAEL'S PROMISES
By Harold Steinbron

Scripture Reading: Romans 9:4

A promise is a guarantee of something future. When  God promises, His Throne stands behind any statement as  to future events. A guarantee is only as good as the word of  the one uttering the promise. When God promises,  forgetfulness or the press of duties that require His    will not hinder His keeping what has been spoken.  He does not make idle threats, nor does He utter what He  has no intention of carrying out.

How amazing that He has recorded so many of His  promises for all mankind and all angels and demons to see  and keep track of! If only one insignificant one were to fail,  a charge of lying could be justly leveled at the One who said,  "I am the Truth." No wonder God levels the charge of  making Him a liar at those who do not believe what He has  written. How lightly men call each other liars, and justly so;  but to charge God with lying, how unthinkable!

Some "spiritualize" God's promises to Israel, of a  perfect and peaceful earth with perfect climate and peaceful  animal and human relations. Isaiah 65 gives such promises,  and it is wonderful just to read it because it contrasts with our present experience.

We must divide between Israel's promises of earthly  blessing and our promises of blessings in the Heavenlies  with Christ, or else we make both to mean nothing, and God  to be a LIAR! May it never be!

CHRIST CONFIRMED THE PROMISES - By Harold Steinbron

  CHRIST CONFIRMED THE PROMISES
By Harold Steinbron

Scripture Reading: Romans 15:8

Many see Christ as the beginner of a new order when He appeared. John walked out of the wilderness after 400 silent years to announce that the Kingdom of Heaven was ready to be set up on this earth. Then Christ the King appeared as proof that God was indeed ready to establish Heaven on earth in keeping with all the promises to David of a throne, to Abraham of a progeny, and to others of
blessing to the whole earth through His people being the head and not the tail, by keeping the Commandments of God (Deuteronomy 28:10-13).

Our Lord appeared to announce God's being ready to set up the long-promised Heaven-on-earth ... nothing new here. Israel was rebellious and crucified the King ... nothing new here. They killed the Twelve after our Lord returned to Heaven, proving they did not want His rule over them ... nothing new here.

Paul appears in the middle of the Acts to announce he had been sent to the Nations (Gentiles) ... Something NEW here! Until Paul, God always had a door open to the non- Jew (Proselyte) ... the back door. Now God announces that the front door of heaven is open to Jew and non-Jew on the same basis. Guilty, hell-deserving sinners can now come by faith in the One who paid for their redemption.

Our Lord came to confirm centuries-old and valid promises, but the Acts records Israel's fall to where the non- Jew always was ... something NEW

A BLESSED PROMISE - By John N. Baker

A  BLESSED PROMISE
By John N. Baker

Scripture Reading: I Corinthians 10:13

We often think our situation is unique and that we have unusual temptations. Our text shoots that theory full of holes. Let us not blame God for our temptations, however. "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man: But every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed" (James 1:13-14). Because of our old Adamic nature, we are tempted by our own lusts. This is why temptations are "common to man," and we are all tempted alike because we are all alike-sinners.

God may not take away our temptations; but He will make the proper provisions, so we can stand against them, that we "might be able to bear it." He never promises to remove temptations but promises us victory over temptations. He alone is the great Enabler in every situation. "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians 4:13). Man is not faithful, but God is always faithful. We can depend upon Him in all situations of life. David realized this when he said, "Thy mercy, 0 Lord, is in the heavens; and Thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds" (Psalms 36:5). Our great God not only brings us through temptations, but uses them to test us and build character within us. How this should teach us to rely totally upon Him!

We are so apt to become frustrated in time of temptation and feel defeated. However, if we will turn our cares over to God and depend upon Him, being the faithful God that He is, He will see us through every trial and temptation.

THE HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE - -Selected

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 1:13

One of the most comforting verses of Scripture, in  Paul's letters, concerning eternal security is Ephesians 1:13.  We find that the Holy Spirit of promise is Himself the seal.

So far as our salvation is concerned, it is a finished  transaction. It also means He actually owns us. We have  become His purchased possession. "We are bought with a  price."

We also rejoice to see that in Ephesians 1:13, it should  read that we were sealed upon believing. The moment we  were saved, we were sealed until the day of redemption. We  were translated out of the darkness into the kingdom of the  Son of God's love (Colossians 1:13). No one can take us out  of the Body of Christ. We have the guarantee and pledge of  the Spirit that He will perform His sealing until the day of  redemption, and that is when we go in the Rapture of the  Church, to meet the Lord in the air. No wonder we have  confidence in our salvation, as Paul says in Romans 8.  Saved and sealed! All in the same moment -the moment we  believed!

There is "nothing that can separate us from the love of  God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." It also was the Holy  Spirit Who baptized us into the one Body of Christ. Thanks  be unto God 'for His sure promise of eternal security  (Ephesians 4:30). He abideth faithful. Whether we wake,  er whether we sleep, we are the Lord's!

Eternal Life - Pastor Chales Wages

Eternal Life
 Pastor Chales Wages

It is not only difficult, but really impossible for anyone to fully grasp the meaning of eternity. No one really knows when time began and when time will end. No man saw the beginning, nor can any man see the end. The only thing we can say with certainty about eternity is that it never stands still. We just have to trust God that He knows because He was there when time began and He will be in existence forever. Habakkuk exclaimed in Habakkuk 1:12, “Art thou not from everlasting, O Lord my God, mine Holy One?”

The Scriptures teach that God’s power is eternal (Rom. 1:20), His purposes are eternal (Eph. 3:11); and His wonderful Person is eternal (I Tim. 1:17).

In the wonderful prayer of our Lord recorded in John 17, Jesus said, “And this is life eternal, that they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent” (vs. 3). In other words, everlasting life is to know God, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom He sent. But how do we get to “know” God and Jesus Christ?

We get to “know” God by believing what He has said. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.” When we receive the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Saviour, He gives us His life, which is eternal. He said in John 14:19, “Because I live, ye shall live also.” God led Paul to write in Colossians 3:3-4, “For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”

One of the most familiar truths in the Scripture is that which Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:7, “Ye must be born again.” Jesus knew the natural man would die. Hebrews 9:27 states, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:” Only the life that God gives when we believe on the Lord Jesus is eternal. What do we believe concerning the Lord Jesus ? The gospel that saves is simply stated: “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” (I Cor. 15:3-4)

Eternal not only refers to the duration of the life that God gives, but also to its quality. It not only speaks of a future position but also of a very present reality. And wonder of wonders, it cannot be lost or taken from us! Jesus said in John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”

Our eternal life is in God’s hand, not ours. Our assurance depends on God’s faithfulness, not on our weakness. Paul was led to write, “I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” (II Tim. 1: 12).

Yes, the eternal life God gives is as eternal as God is. And, yes, the eternal life He gives is the eternal life we should live. If you have not as yet trusted Jesus Christ for eternal life, remember the Scripture says, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36).
