Water Baptism
By Jerry Shugart
Dear Fellow Grace Believers,
There are some Mid Acts Christians
who teach that the Jewish believers could not be saved unless they first
submitted to the rite of water baptism.
However, before a person could be
baptized with water that person must first believe, as witnessed by the
following exchange between Philip and the eunuch:
"And as they went on their
way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water;
what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest
with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe
that Jesus Christ is the Son of God" (Acts 8:36-37).
Before the eunuch was baptized
with water he was already "born of God" because he believed that
Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God:
"Whosoever believeth
that Jesus is the Christ is born of God..For whatsoever is born
of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the
world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that
believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?" (1 John 5:1,4-5).
As soon as a Jew believed in the
name of the Lord Jesus he was born of God and made a son of God:
"He came unto his own, and
his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power
to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which
were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of
man, but of God" (John
1:12-13).
The author of the book of Hebrews
tells us how the LORD deals with His sons:
"For whom the Lord loveth he
chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure
chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the
father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are
partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons" (Hebrews12:6-8).
That is exactly how He treats all
of His sons who are members of the Body of Christ:
"For if we would judge
ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened
of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world" (1 Orinthians11:31-32).
The sons of God, those born of
God, will never be condemned with the world.
In His grace,
Jerry
