THE GOD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
By Robert E. Hanna
Scripture Reading: Psalms 111:3
"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference; for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus" (Romans 3:10, 21-24). "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).
The Apostle Paul, being himself a Jew by origin, grieved for Israel, "For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth" (Romans 10:3, 4).
Human self-righteousness is graphically defined in the sixth verse of Isaiah 64, "We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags ... " One may well ponder Job's searching question, " ... How should man be just with God" (Job 9:2b)?
Our own apostle gives the joyful answer: " ... Be ye reconciled to God. For He hath made Him [Christ] to be sin for us, [He] who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him" (II Corinthians S:2ob, 21). The resultant condition is that of being " .. .found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith" (Philippians 3:9). God alone is righteous!
