Tower of Babel - By: Fern Cambell

GOD* had promised that there would never again be a world-wide flood GOD said to His heart "I am not adding to curse again the ground for the sake of the man because the heart of man forms evil from his youth" (Gen. 8:21). GOD was not fooled by mankind, HE knew that the nature of mankind had not changed since the fall!

Time passed. As yet all of the people of the earth spoke the same language. Although the population had increased very much, mankind had not spread out over the earth, but they had remained clumped together. After a time, the mass of people moved from the East and found the Plain of Shinar, (the land of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers). There they settled !

Just as large cities today breed crime, the mass of unregenerated hearts of mankind began to try to figure out a way to foil any attempt by GOD to judge them again--as HE had judged mankind by the flood "They said--each man to his neighbor, 'LETS GO! We will make bricks and we will burn/bake them thoroughly!" And the bricks were to them for stone and the bitumen was to them for asphalt (tar). And they said "LET'S GO! We will build for us a city and a tower and its (the tower's) head/top will be in the HEAVENS and we will make for ourselves a NAME lest we might be scattered upon the faces of all the earth!" (Gen. 11:3,4).

How the people of the earth underestimated GOD! GOD was very aware of their project! "And THE LORD** went down to see the city and the tower which the sons of man built. And THE LORD said, "Behold, one people and one tongue/language they all are, and THIS is what they begin to do And now it will not be restrained from them all which they prepare to do" (Gen. 11:7).

Note how exquisitely the judgment of GOD fitted the crime! And GOD SAID, "LET'S GO! WE will go down and WE will scramble/mix/ confuse their tongues/languages there so that man will not hear the tongue/lamguage of his neighbor!" (Gen. 11:7).

"And THE LORD scattered them from there upon the faces of ALL the earth, and they ceased to build the city. Therefore, her (the city's) name was called BABEL because there THE LORD scrambled, confused the tongues languages of ALL THE EARTH!" (Gem 11:-8-9).

In chapter ten of Genesis we have the genealogy of the tree sons of Noah--Shem, Ham and Japheth. The descents of Shem were (in this order): Arphaxad, Salah, Eber, and Peleg. Verse 25 says: "to Eber were two sons: the name of one was Peleg, FOR IN HIS DAYS, the earth was divided." It is interesting to note that the word "peleg" means "to divide" or "division." In chapter eleven, we have the genealogy of Shem with the dates. Peleg was born approximately 100 years after the flood. Some feel that the division at the birth of Peleg was physical (the earth actually splitting apart). Most feel that division was the scattering of mankind by the confusion of the languages at the tower of Babel. Nothing divides people more thoroughly than different languages!

Another interesting thing to note is that GOD scrambled only the top layer of the languages. The basic underlying grammar of all languages the same: i.e., nouns, verbs, etc. This is why an organization like Wycliff can function. The missionaries plow through the surface jumble in order to get the basic structure ( grammar) of the language. If evolution were true, there would be no possibility of deciphering unknown languages.
