Scripture Reading: II Corinthians 8:9
An old favorite hymn begins, "Marvelous grace of our loving Lord." True, pure grace is from Him alone. How shallow are those who claim to live by their own self- sufficiency. Natural man can in no sense generate the spiritual strength required to survive human existence victoriously. Our victory was purchased, and "we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us" (Romans 8:37). "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich."
The work of God's grace is unfathomable to our limited capacity to understand. He was under no obligation to pay the penalty for our guilt; it was a voluntary act of His grace. "Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross" (Philippians 2:5b-8).
Man finds it difficult to comprehend that he can do literally and absolutely nothing to earn or deserve salvation. He ponders Job's question: "How should man be just with God?" (Job 9:2) Our apostle explains, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which He shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; that being justified by His grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life" (Titus 3=5-7). Such is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!
