ACCORDING
TO HIS GRACE

Scripture Reading: II
Timothy 1: 8, 9
Regardless of our degree
of understanding of God's working, we can in no way diminish or deny
His absolute sovereignty. Whatever He wills to do, He does. How it
affects our individual lives is governed solely by the fabric of His
master plan and program. As believers, we perform within the strength
He gives us by His Holy Spirit. Paul emphasizes this, saying, "I
take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in
persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak,
then am I strong" (II Corinthians 12:10). He leaves no doubt as
to the Source of his strength as he declares, "I can do all
things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (Philippians
4:13).
Not only what we perform,
but what we endure is by the enablement of His grace. "Be thou
partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of
God, Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not
according to our works, but according to His own purpose and GRACE,
which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began."
What a program, what a
purpose, what a statement of God's sovereignty! "According as He
hath chosen us in Him BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD, that we
should be holy and without blame before Him in love" (Ephesians
1:4). Thus He formed the Church which is His Body. " ... Christ
also loved the Church, and gave Himselffor it ... that He might
present it to Himself a glorious Church, not having spot, or wrinkle,
or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish"
(Ephesians S:2Sb, 27). All this, according to His grace!
