POWER OR PERSON? - Richard A Mazek

    POWER OR PERSON?
Richard A Mazek

Scripture Reading: Acts 2:4; I Corinthians 6:19

It is commonly taught that the kingdom saints on the day of Pentecost received the Person of the Holy Spirit; but, is this teaching in accord with the Scriptures?

Most fundamentalists will agree that the Old Testament saints were not personally indwelt by the Holy Spirit. During this time the Holy Spirit came "upon" (not within) the believers and energized them for specific services (Numbers 11:16, 17, 25, 29; Judges 3:10, 6:34, I Sam. 11:6; 16:13). Did this mode then change at Pentecost?

In Luke 24:49, Christ told His disciples that they would receive "power from on high." Our Lord further goes on in Acts 1:5 to tell His disciples that they would be baptized "with" Holy Spirit power (no definite article) and that they would receive "power" (verse 8) after the Holy Spirit is come "upon" them (Old Testament mode).

Let us now move on to the Day of Pentecost to see what actually took place.

Acts 2:3 - tongues of fire "upon" each of them

Acts 2:4 - filled with Holy Spirit power (no definite article)

Acts 2:38 - receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (power-ch. 1:8)

Thus, in full accord with Qld Testament prophecy (Joel 2:28), these saints received the power of the Holy Spirit. During Pentecost, God was still dealing with Israel under His prophetic program. It is not until Paul and the Dispensation of Grace that we have the actual indwelling of the Holy Spirit

 (I Corinthians 6:19, 20; Romans 8:11; I Thessalonians 4:8).
